Swap 1200FJ / 1200 XJR...possible or not???

Hi all,

I'm looking for informations for a friend of mine.
He bought a rubbish XJR (his 1st bike), and unfortunately, a couple of weeks later, a rod has broken.
I'm looking for a new engine for him, but 1200 XJR engines in France are pretty rare, or too expansive.
So, as far as I know, a swap is possible between a 1200FJ and a 1200 XJR engine....but I'd like further informations before I tell him to buy an engine that wouldn't fit into his frame.
His bike is a 97 XJR 1200, and the model of used engine we've found is a 1200 FJ 3CX (1990, 88898 kms).

So there is my question: if anybody has already done it: will it fit into the frame without modification at all or is it a harder task to do this swap?
I precise that we will take his old XJR's carbs, and if needed, ignition, etc etc.

Thanks to all to give us a few informations about it

Hello wam, welcome.

From what I know, the XJR and FJ engines are compatible as far as the mounting points, but the chain alignment will be different. The XJR uses a longer output shaft so the countershaft sprocket sits further out than the sprocket on the FJ engine. You will need to convert the FJ engine over to the longer XJR output shaft (Including clutch push rod and XJR sprocket cover) or figure a way for a offset sprocket on the FJ output shaft.

Electrical: Try and get the 1990 FJ DCI ignition box so you can be assured the ignition box is compatible with the pick up coils on the FJ engine. I don't know if there are any differences between the XJR ignition and the FJ ignition. Perhaps they are the same...don't know.
See my signature line (below) for the link to downloading the Owner's Handbooks. In the back of each handbook is a wiring schematic for the bike. Get a handbook for the 1990 FJ1200 and a handbook for the 1997 XJR you're working on (they are free)...study the wiring diagrams from each bike, this will help you in your electrical wiring.

Fuel: The 1997 XJR is gravity fed and the carbs on the 1990 FJ are set up for a fuel pump delivery so if you want to use the FJ engine and carbs on the XJR and keep it gravity fed, you will need to change the float needle seats on the FJ carbs over to the larger seats used for the 1984-1987 gravity flow FJ's. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=9836.0

That's about all I know...

I suspect you find will limited feedback from this forum on installing a FJ engine into a XJR frame.

For instance, in the USA the XJ and XJR's were never imported, so they are rare as hen's teeth here.

In the absence of feedback here on the FJ Owners forum, I suggest you hop on over to the XJR forum for a visit.

I don't know if this will help but here is a quote from another member on the push rod lengths. "The clutch pushrod for your FJ should measure the 258mm. The XJR pushrod is 8mm longer at 266mm".

As I recall an R1 sprocket has the correct offset and will bolt directly onto the shaft.

Here is a good site to check spec's/splines and dimensions for stock type sprockets.

Close.......you need an offset sprocket for an R1.   One place is Trac Dynamics: http://tracdynamics.com/collections/parts-and-accessories/products/off-set-front-sprockets

I think PBI also does them.

If you don't want to split the cases on the FJ anyone to swap the XJR shaft, the offset sprocket could be an option

Great!
Thanks to all of you for all these informations.
I'll study this, I already have the XJR technical's book, so i'll compare it to the FJ to check the electrical wiring differencies, and see if we'll do it or not.

Thanks for all those replies, I knew i could find some experts here to help us.
