Title: my fj1200t turbo bike build
Post by: giantkiller on December 21, 2014, 07:13:34 PM
Ok so I accidentally got a turbo kit off eBay. A while ago. NOS RB racing complete kit.  For $1500. Put the bid in didn't expect to win. Oh shit now I have to come up with $1500 bucks.... Borrowed from my 401k(daughters inheritance)

I thought I've got the crashed 87 with a motor that only has 865miles on it I'll put it on that. And since I can't get a title. I'll make a drag toy.... But boy it sure would be nice to take it on the road (legally). And embarrass some busas and the like with a 29 year old bike with a collectors plate on it. So I just picked up a rough 86 with a title for$600.
And now begins the long drawn out build up.
First some damage picks of the bike(http://fjowners.com/gallery/8/2349_17_12_14_9_36_45_5.jpeg%5Bimg%5Dhttp://fjowners.com/gallery/8/2349_17_12_14_9_36_47_6.jpeg)http://fjowners.com/gallery/8/2349_17_12_14_9_36_42_4.jpeg (http://fjowners.com/gallery/8/2349_17_12_14_9_36_42_4.jpeg)(http://fjowners.com/gallery/8/2349_17_12_14_9_36_42_4.jpeg)[/img]

Good find, hopefully with the good motor from the '87 and the good title for the '86 you will have enough good plastic to give it a great paint job. Waiting with baited breath for this build thread.  :good:

Yah, Fred just getting started. Still kicking ideas around. I'm going to use the plastic that came with this bike. Going to fill in all the missing chunks with plastex. And thinking of painting it midnight blue. Like the 89. But finding a color with a slight bit more blue metal flake. And then try and ghost all the stock graphics in red. Going to also maybe try and make an aluminum gas tank under a faux shell. Posts will probably be very spread out. Got to collect the money along the way and then get the parts.
I've already got a Snow performance boost cooler. Just trying to figure out where to put the pump and tank for that is going to take a while.

Yah the 1350 is pretty interesting. This if I can get it done. Ought to be down right nuts. Going to be a short drive kinda bike. Rip around every once in a while. And take it to the drag strip to ever so often. To try and scare myself.

your snow injection kit is referenced by a boost switch? the one on my audi is referenced off the map sensor.

Yah boost switch. I wish I would have known. RB racing that made the turbo kit. Makes a water/methanol injection for bikes. But now I have $280 into the snow kit.

This looks interesting Dan. I look forward to your progress.

Do you have clearance on the left side from the heat on your leg?

Both of those pipes are gonna be hot hot.

They both have heat shields. But I'm sure it's still going to be warm. I'm going to ceramic coat every thing satin black. Should help some too.

Mostly just been working OT. So I could get most of the parts gathered up for this build. But it's finally warmed up so. I started. Cut the seat pan. Going to shorten the tail section about 3". Will probably use about an 1" of gel on the bottom and 1/4" on the front. And build the back up with foam like the Corbin gunfighter. This isn't going to be a bike I'm going to ride any distance. Just going to cover short distances realllyy fast!!! So this will drop my 257lb center of gravity lower on the bike. And keep me locked in.

Next cut tail frame.. If I ever have a day off.
Progress is going to be slow but will keep posting.

Well I cut the tail frame and fabbed up a gusset. Put a piece of fj handle bar tube (perfect fit) inside the upper tubes of the tail frame. And made a cap for the end of the cutoff tube. Then welded it up. (My welds look terrible but are solid)

I put the 2 pieces of the seat pan on the shortened tail frame. Hooked the front in and snapped the rear section in the seat latches. Clamped them down at the seam. Then plastic welded them together. Sent the pan and a tail cowl to KnoPlace upholstery. Told them I wanted it as low as possible and wanted it to look like a gunfighter. With a gel padding

The turbo pieces all ceramic coated satin black. Don't have the heat Shields on they are ceramic coated satin black also.

That seat looks it needs some small downward facing hooks on the rear to catch ones leathers in the event you slide up during a full power scoot event. Looking great Dan. Kookaloo with Boost....

Hey Dave I didn't build the Turbo. I got it off fleabay. A guy had it made by RB Racing for his 89 fj back in 89. And never got around to putting it on. He said he got caught up in a Lamborghini build. And never got around to putting it on. Then sold the fj. He said he was cleaning out the shop and found it in the box under a bench. He wanted the $2800 he paid for it back in 89. I bid $1500 for it and won. It's complete down to the jetting for the flatslide. Paper work says it's good for around 200 hp on stock motor and pump gas.
Of course pump gas in 89 was probably alot better than we have now. I've got a boost controler/gauge/wideband afr so should be able to fine tune it. Ceramic coating and turbo blanket should help with the heat. Working on putting a small oil cooler in the chin fairing, for the Turbo. Was going to try plumbing it inline with the rpm cooler. But Randy suggested running it off one of the oil galley plugs through the cooler and directly to the Turbo. Much simpler. And he said its filtered oil with higher pressure than the cooler circuit.

I was going to try and build the 1380 motor for it. But I think I'll just use the stock 87 motor I have. It only had 865 miles on it. When it got crashed it was a demo. With Randy's undercut transmission of course

Then after the Turbo doesn't scare me anymore. I'll build the 1380. With Turbo pistons. So I can pump up the boost. Next winter.

Yah Fred if I don't do the 1380. And I can stop coming up with new ideas for it I'm hoping to get it done before the Colorado rally.

Cut down the side plates. Going to blast them. And then paint them satin black. Have to make a bracket to mount the brake master cylinder to the subframe for the tail. Have to make room for the R1 Swingarm. Besides there's definitely not going to be any passengers on this bike.
