Title: Dead
Post by: big r on April 19, 2015, 03:12:14 PM
Just went to fire the old girl up and got a click. Battery dead and has hot spots in it. I guess I will be getting a new one. Going back to work this aft. and won't be home till next friday night. All my connections are clean and tight, ground is good. Had the battery on tender for the winter but it is a lead acid one and is 4 yrs. old. Would like to get a li-ion one but that isn't in the budget right now. Have a good week men. Big R

wish I could get 4 years out of a battery. I do run a AGM now and hope it lasts a bit longer.

Cheers.

A good AGM with good care and proper charging voltage should last you more than 4 years. I have 2.5 on my AGM so I cannot provide personal experience.

Beware your charging voltage.....check your battery specs, when they say 14.4 volts max, they mean it.
The only way to get your FJ charging system to do this is with a adjustable Transpo regulator.

The old school lead acid batteries are much more forgiving on the stock FJ system that can (and will) zing over 15 volts.

Went for a 100 miler last Friday and adjusted my regulator,  it sat on 14.3-14.4 all day. The adjustable feature is nice.

Thanks but it is a little dirty.. I took it out for it's first run after the overhaul of the top end wanting to check for oil leaks etc.. No problems found to date.  Planing on another run tomorrow. Want to get 500 miles on her so I can change the oil and check all the TQ's and clearances. Then it should be good go.

Can't wait to see how your project comes out. Sounds like you have caught the "bug" from Pat .  You do know he has sent quiet a few of us down that meditation path. Zen and the art of shinny things.. Between him and Leon...........

Here is about a 100 page thread on battery's. If you don't have a headache already you will by the time you read all of this :).

This is what I am running at present. Not enough experience to say anything other than it is light and works.
