Title: 1990 FJ 1200 Clutch issues
Post by: zoomjay on August 12, 2017, 06:40:20 AM
I finally have my 1990 FJ together and running (don't ask me about my carb issues).  Finally get it on the road... running real good...  hit the throttle and...  the clutch slips when it really hits the power band.  Ride easy for a bit more... do it again... yep, slipping.

So.. since this bike is not planned to be a long-term part of my arsenal....  (although it only has 24,500 miles on it)...  what are the min parts I need to replace in the clutch?  Cover gasket I get... and am guessing that I need friction disks (is that what they are called??).  If this continues would like to order and get them quickly and cheaply.

Thanks.

Check the files section. There is an upgrade that includes adding an extra pressure plate as well as adding an extra fiber disc

Start with adding a second spring on top the existing one, it will get you down the road a little farther before needing to change the clutch.

Zoomjay,

If you plan to replace the disks, a complete aftermarket clutch pack can be cheaper and easier.  SEARCH here for options.  There is a factory spec for the thickness of the entire clutch pack; I doubt that you would wear out a clutch in 24k miles, unless you drag race often.  The extra clutch spring might do the job for you, anyway.  Is everything good (not binding or worn) at the hand-lever?

hand lever and clutch master and slave were rebuilt... so, they are good as far as I know...
