Title: Joe Bonamassa live at Carnegie Hall...WOW!
Post by: Pat Conlon on February 09, 2018, 01:12:21 PM
What a treat! Both visually and musically. Get the Blu-ray DVD set the audio options on DTS 5.1 and turn it up!

It's been several years since I've seen or heard anything as good as this.

Joe is one of my favorites. Great guitarist.

I've been binge listening to JB for the past 6 months. Never heard of him before 2017. I can't even remember how I connected. Probably surfing YouTube. What I particularly enjoy are his interviews and his collaborations with heart on her sleeve singer Beth Hart.

I just found out about him last week. Our local PBS station (KCET) had the Carnegie Hall concert as part of their (seemingly continuous) fund raising efforts.

I pull in their broadcast at 720p and only stereo sound. Even then, I was gob smacked, even with KCET interruptions every other song, for their funding appeal.

Who is this guy? Yes, as Rick said, a damn good guitarist, that's who...  The band he had with him was World Class. Literally world class, back up singers from Australia, cello/erhu player from China, percussionist from Egypt, mandolin/banjo/sax player from Ireland with the pianist and drummer from the US.

What a beautiful show, in Blu-ray and DTS HD 5.1 sound.  https://www.amazon.com/Live-At-Carnegie-Hall-Acoustic/dp/B06ZYR7WHF/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_15_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=A90TJP3AAPMMDP4QW174 (https://www.amazon.com/Live-At-Carnegie-Hall-Acoustic/dp/B06ZYR7WHF/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_15_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=A90TJP3AAPMMDP4QW174)

Previously, I had given up on modern music. Try as I might, I can't relate to rap/hip hop and the Taylor Swift generation of music. It seems soulless to me.

But I can relate to Joe Bonamassa....there is hope.

Some You Tube samples:

You might be content just watching the You Tube vids, but you really, really need to hear this in DTS 5.1

Truly amazing!  An international cast of musicians who can lay down a beat that sounds almost as if it originated from a studio in Muscle Shoals rather than Carnegie Hall. I have to get more of this group's stuff.

What you are describing is what I have come to call the distinction between listening to a band, and listening to music. Most of us have a few favorite bands we'll always listen to. We expect them to sound a certain way. We can pick them out on the radio in about 8 beats and they have signature sounds or ways of doing things that we expect to hear a few times in every song.

Then on the other hand you get an experience like Steve Hackett (guitarist for Genesis in an early period) live and it just takes you away someplace nice. He doesn't have a fixed group of people that form a "band". There's no guitarist, or drummer or keyboard player standing out on stage. His ensembles have a way of passing the melody back and forth that is so totally seamless that even looking at the stage it was taking me a while to realize it had switched from guitar to clarinet, to keyboard and back again. It was about maintaining the tone of the music 100%.

Bonamassa has an acoustic performance from the Vienna Opera Hall that is really amazing.  Anyone out there gotten back into (or never left) vinyl?  If so, this album is a must have IMHO...  beautifully recorded, stable and spacious soundstage, absolutely fantastic listening experience.  Probably good on CD or even mp3, but the 180g vinyl they make these days is pretty spectacular.  So is Joe's acoustic guitar work...

Pat,
I really had you figured as a Taylor Swift fan.

Maybe not the pop Taylor, but surely you're a fan of her Country work?  :-)

Sure, her early work is ok, cute songs. I enjoyed her 2012 Grammy performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SDXBz-T4HE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SDXBz-T4HE)

My grand daughters love her current pop songs..."Come on Papa, dance with us..." What's a papa going to do...?

What a coicincidink.... Just turned on the PBS station from Buffalo NY and there's a live show recorded at the old naval college in London, England. (Where the big final battle scene in Thor 2 was for you young'ns).  Of course it's pledge drive again.  He's performing in Buffalo in October and Toronto in November this year.  But his tour schedule doesn't list that far ahead.

Tour dates

Ashamed to think I am not at all familiar with him.  :sorry:  Thanks for the enlightenment!  :drinks:

Joe is certainly one of the best I've heard in a looong time... I'm partial to his acoustic unplugged versions.
I've always been a fan of vinyl (and always will) but I gotta tell you, that 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio from the Bluray absolutely fills my house with sound. The 192kHz sample rate and 24 bit depth from 5 discrete channels (vs CD 44.1/16 bit) sounds really good. One thing I noticed is that the acoustics at Carnegie Hall are sharp so the rear channels pick up a nice ambiance on the music and vocals. (Makes up for the crowd applause at the end of the songs) Tina Gou's erhu floats thru the sound stage.

You might want to give a listen to Eric Johnson ...

His current stuff isn't as 'hard' as his earlier work but every bit as good! Make sure you check out 'Cliffs of Dover' off the Live from Austin album.

Funny, I also recently listened to Beth Hart and Jo Bonamassa. Amazing, for three reasons. Musicianship, singing and the quality of the recording. I am using a LINN Accurate DS. It is used to stream any types of files from a hard drive. The beauty of a system like this is that it relays ALL the information to your Amp, speakers etc. Now if you use compressed files like MP3's it will always sound crappy. Fortunately many artists are realizing that there are some audiophiles out there that want good sounding music. Many master quality flac files are available from older music. Say FJ owners vintage. Led Zeppelin released a re-mastered version of their entire collection in flac files. The difference in sound quality is stunning. Most old bands, The who, Stones, Doors and many, many more recorded their music very well on analog equipment that was light years better than the digital stuff used today. The issue with a lot of the recordings today is that most of the music is processed to death. Each layer of processing takes your ear farther away from the instrument .
Rant over.

:good2:+1 on that....lossy compression vs lossless, no comparison on the right equipment in the right settings.

My 25 year old niece with her MP3 music files, thinking that playing that shit over a set of $500 headphones, was the bomb....
Well, she was astonished when I played for her some remastered 192kHz/24bit Flac files. She had no idea what she was missing...

aaaah the kids now a days...

I've tried to like Bonamassa, I really have. I wanted to, but I just can'r warm up to him and I can't stand to watch him. Amazing musician, technically proficient, I admire his talent, but I just don't feel any soul. I'll take Buddy Guy...

The only thing I've heard Beth Hart do is her duet with Bonamassa on "Joy", and I prefer the original by Lucinda Williams. I'll have to check out more of her stuff.

Rock, my friend...........

I find Bonamassa enjoyable.  I also like Buddy Guy a lot.  But I think Beth Hart  _MORE_  than complements both of those guys!  I like all 3 of 'em as performers.

Maybe use GOOGLE to check out the following videos, it's worth it:

"I'd rather go blind"  is 9 minutes of Bonamassa and Hart  live in Amsterdam.

"What you gonna do about me?"  Buddy G. and Hart

"Broken and ugly"  Beth solo & HOT and live at Paradiso

I do admire the self-confidence that Beth exudes.....check out "Love is a lie" by Beth

So which of the 3 do I like best?  I'd only date Beth  "Sweaty Betty"  Hart!!!
