Title: FZ1 Swing Arm Install
Post by: aviationfred on March 29, 2018, 09:40:37 PM
Installation of the FZ1/Fazer swing arm is being done. So far all is going ok. Preliminarily everything looks like it will line up and bolt together perfectly. Tomorrow we will get everything bolted together and adjusted as needed. I also installed the Speed Hut GPS speedometer. I am extremely happy with the colors and how the night time colors work. The matching tachometer and fuel/volt meter should arrive the middle of April.

I have ran into a slight hiccup with the swing arm mod. With the swing arm installed and the rear wheel in place. Pretty much complete with the job. All that remained was to install the exhaust. This is where the problem reared its ugly head. The wider swing arm creates clearance issues with the Yoshimura slip ons.  :ireful:

I have a back up plan. A phone call to a fellow FJ owner to enquire about a rare exhaust that I saw hanging on the wall in his garage a few years ago. I am going to guess, that it has hung there for about 15 years. A bit of negotiation and it will now be on its way to me on Tuesday.

The exhaust is a SuperTrapp SuperLite Internal Disc 4-1
The '86 photo is for display purpose. The exhaust that I am getting was originally on a '93.

Fred, are you ok on the clearance for the passenger foot pegs vs swing arm?
On my T-Ace swing arm I had to shave the foot peg attachment nuts and studs down for clearance, as well as space out the aluminum side brackets with washers.

Keeps the sharp edges of the foot peg nuts from gouging the outside top corner and side of the swing arm.

Zip zip with my belt sander did the trick.

The rear foot peg bolt/nut clearance is ok. It is mainly the steel muffler brackets on the Yoshi's and the muffler to swing arm clearance. I really like the washers under the foot peg brackets idea.  :dance2:

Yea, same here....To get clearance I had to use a low profile button head bolt (button head facing swinger) with a ss acorn nut on the outside.

I actually had the swing arm sitting in my living room for about a month. I should have sent it to Pat for a bit of a shine.  :sarcastic:

Seriously, I almost bought a black one.

Here are some photos of the dual exhaust clearance issues.

On a better note, the rear end install is complete. Everything is torqued and the chain alignment is perfect. The Carbon Fiber chain guard fits well and has no clearance issues. The final photos is something like what the final job will look like except with a SuperTrapp 4-1 internal disc exhaust.

What steps did you take to line up the sprockets?

I installed a Honda VF1000F 18 tooth front sprocket, and a 4mm thick washer on each side on the axle. A pair of bushings were also made to fit in the chain adjuster with a 20mm I'D for the smaller FJ axle. The bushings also acted as spacers. I will add some close up photos of the axle and spacer set up.

I remember having a problem with my rear brake line, where the banjo connects to the m/c.
It kept loosening up. The up motion of the swinger rotated the banjo counter clock wise.
To alleviate this I ordered a custom line from Spiegler and used this type of banjo:

This kept the brake line well clear.

I have a Spiegler brake line ordered. I will be routing it like the traditional GSXR route. Along the top of the swing arm and looped around the end. The loop should allow for any movement.

Hopefully the brake line and the exhaust will arrive towards the end of the week and the bike will be back on the road this weekend.

The taller box section of the FZ1 swinger vs brake line will change things..... Just be aware.
I've never liked how you guys run the brake line on the GSXR rim swap with the under slung caliper.

Speaking of rear GSXR rims, how does the center line of the back tire line up with the front?
Is there an offset?

I have actually done a true wheel alignment yet. It will be done before it hits the road. As it sits.... my calibrated eye ball shows the alignment is dead centered.

No offense to the guys who've done it, but I agree with Pat. To me it looks like an after thought.

Fred,
Did you consider using the hugger fender/chain guard with the FZ1 swingarm?

Yea, I was thinking the same thing David.

Pyramid Plastics (UK) makes some neat things for the Fazer.....

Looks like the listing for the FZ1 huggers are for the later model swing arms.

The swing arm mod is complete. New exhaust installed and all clearance issues resolved. I still need to verify how centered the rear wheel is.

Fred, where did you get the Gunfighter & Lady recovered?

A local upholstery shop. I had them cut the passenger section down a bit and square it a little. Removed some foam on the sides to narrow the seat up front.

I did an alignment check of the rear wheel. It is almost perfectly centered. 1/16 of an inch to the right

Good news.....that's much better than 3/4" someone reported.

Did you measure with 2 straight edges?

I used a center line and the string method.
