Title: 2019 West Coast Rally - Hayfork Bar 717 Ranch 5/30-6/2/2019
Post by: Flynt on December 30, 2018, 10:00:27 AM
New thread to track interest...  I'll leave this open for 2 weeks and allow changes to your vote during that time.  At the end of this period we'll see if we have the required attendance to take the next step, collection of a deposit from those planning to attend (not sure of deposit size just yet, but it will be a meaningful number to encourage planned attendance).  If you'd like to attend but want to skip the meals (bad idea IMHO, but can be done), send me a PM and I'll keep track...  then I'll post a list of names to confirm attendees and preferences.  No PM means you want the meal plan.  Here's the deal:

Event: 2019 FJ Owners West Coast Rally

Location: Bar 717 Ranch, Hyampom Rd, Hayfork, CA 96041 http://www.bar717.com (http://www.bar717.com)

Dates: Available from 5/30/19 (Thursday afternoon arrivals) through 6/2/19 (Monday checkout/departure).
Rates**:

2 meals/day plus carry off lunch included.  (also incl Thursday night dinner and late arrival sandwich bar, Sunday morning breakfast and carry off lunch)
      Camping  $45/night
Platform (3 wall structures with cots) $65/night
Guest Rooms $130/night for single or $190/night double occupancy

Without meals (not recommended!…  long way to food and roads not friendly for riding/driving back to Ranch afterward!)
      Camping  $15/night
      Platform  $35/night
Guest Rooms $100/night for single or $130/night double occupancy

** All rates are 2 night minimum stay.  Individuals can stay from 2 to 4 nights, Thursday through Sunday night (departing Monday) if desired.

Routes++:
   Loop 1 - Hwy 36 to Fortuna.  101 to 299.  299 to Douglas City.  Hwy 3 back to Hayfork.  https://goo.gl/maps/6FGAECaH6912 (https://goo.gl/maps/6FGAECaH6912)
Loop 2 - Underwood Mtn Rd to 299.  299 to Willow Creek.  96 to I5 at Yreka.  Hwy 3 back to Hayfork: https://goo.gl/maps/Ly73h5nKMtT2 (https://goo.gl/maps/Ly73h5nKMtT2)
   more to follow...
++ Routes are suggestions from Bar 717 Director, Kent Collard.  Kent has motorcycling experience in the area and has some experience with these suggestions…  these routes are 270 and 350 miles respectively, so we'll need to shorten them up...  of course other suggestions are welcomed!

Agenda: TBD, but here’s a rough timeline…
Thursday (5/30) - Afternoon arrivals gather for dinner/drinks and wait for greet arrivals
Friday (5/31) - Morning or ?? departure for group ride(s) planned out Th night.  Friday arrivals join for dinner.
Saturday (6/1) - Morning or ?? ride…  Group Dinner/Activities (I have no plan here, but Monkey will come up with some fun stuff I’m sure)
Sunday (6/2) - Morning or ?? ride for us retired types…  Most of group departs after breakfast.
   Monday (6/3) - stragglers depart

We’ll need ~20 or more riders for this Bar 717 option to be available.  Please use the voting buttons so we can get a fresh count on who’s a.) committed to attend, b.) likely to attend, c.) unlikely to attend, or d.) won’t attend? I’ll give this process 14 days, then we’ll decide if Hayfork makes the cut into finals…  (against the usual Willits KOA I presume, although we’ll need a coordinator for that option).

Happy Holidays,

Frank

Sterling stuff. Such military precision. Monty would be proud.
Put me down for:
Thursday night arrival (no meals)
Friday camp with all meals,
Saturday camp with all meals
Sunday just breakfast would be good

I am interested in attending, but its a 15 hour drive. I would probably have to leave Wednesday afternoon, hotel halfway, and arrive midday Thursday. and then leave Sunday morning, hotel that night, and arrive home Monday evening. Ill have to see what my schedule looks like, and if thats even a possibility.

I'm in for a Thursday arrival.
All meals included.
I will probably stay through till Monday morning.

I see you voted unlikely...  as long as we get above the minimum of ~20, late additions are no problem at this place.  Play it by ear and make it happen if it becomes a priority.  I bet the SoCal crew can help you out.  It would be good to ride with you again.

I highly doubt there is reliable coverage. Maybe do a search online of area coverage maps for different carriers.

I'll confirm with Kent, but I've been talking to him via his cell phone when he's at the ranch...

I'll report back.

I'll report back.

No cell phone coverage at Bar 717 Ranch, ok reception in Hayfork but Verizon network.  They have a work around with wifi (if you VOIP), but will only extend that option for a couple people max.

They can give an emergency contact land line number if needed...  I'll personally leave that with friends/family.  We'll also get coverage areas on the rides and can keep up with the world...  or you can try disconnecting a bit more.  That approach is working well for me currently!

meals included...

Here's Kent's response when asked for more details on the food:

"Breakfast options would be hot or cold cereal, eggs, hash browns, sausage, pancakes, French toast, fruit.  We can also do a cook-your-own pancake/eggs/hash brown breakfast on the grills next to the kitchen.  This can be good for a morning where you might want a rolling mealtime, say on the last day since people can come down and make their breakfast anytime in  a couple hour spread of time instead of eating all at the same time.  Sack lunch options would be PB&J, tuna, or egg salad sandwiches, with some veggies, cookies, etc.  Dinner main dishes could be spaghetti, pork chops, baked chicken, chicken enchilada casserole, hamburgers, pizza, etc.  We can also do a vegetarian option for any meal."

We can spec meals in advance and I'll coordinate that if Hayfork gets at least 20 people willing to pay a deposit.  We'll need $1000 deposit by March 1 latest to secure Bar 717 for the WCR weekend, so let's get going on the commits...  that's going to be $50 each roughly on deposits required within the next few weeks, so plan accordingly.

I'm in the commit column of course, but there's at least some chance we'll have another weekend of wet rides, good meals, and campfire camaraderie...  I for one am down with that!  Rather ride more of course, but we'll have a great time regardless of conditions.

Gentlement,

In for the duration - will be sharing with Mr. ZOA NOM ( just to keep things tidy between Flynt & him...!).

As long as the beer & booze holds out, no problems anticipated!

Very glad to see Firehawk attending as well!

Andy, still have the bungee cords to return from the Renegade Rally, hope to see you before the WCR!

Ryan - motor in with the So Cal group (they do get lonely!)

Ride safe,

Midget

Mike, counting you as one vote in commit...  correct?

That makes 8 committed out of 20 needed and we're making progress.  I'll ping Zari and try to get the Sacramento folks engaged...  Other ping silent but likely riders please.  I apologize if I'm being pushy, but To pull off Hayfork we need to be pretty organized and early.  I think we can do it, but need help in getting out the vote!

I would give Zari and Olsen a nudge, but their phone numbers got lost along with everyone else’s when my iPhone did it’s thing.
Instead then I’ll just moan about Garth, Capt Ron, Mopar man, Simi Ed, etc, etc who should get their fingers out.
Then again, I bet Ron Oort will come through.

Unless we need to decide now, will consider sleeping quarters when we get to that point.

No need to decide on sleeping quarters yet...  they have at least 5x the capacity we need and we'll be the only guests there, so we should all have the full range of choices available.  Once we are past the go/no-go hurdle (~20 riders committed to pay deposit), I'll send a summary and we'll dive into days/rooms/meals discussion.

Frank

BTW - with Derek and Donna we are at 13-14 riders now and have at least 1 double occupancy pillion (that would be may secret weapon Diane)...  so we are very close.  If Mark O and one more (maybe Cap'n Ron?) sign up, I'll start organizing the summary for a quick shift into real planning.

Sorry peeps, but I'm out for this rally.  I've had enough of Oregon and I'm getting the hell out of here for good.  House will go on the market lake April or early May and will be priced for a reasonably quick sale.

Hope everyone has a great time. I should be able to make the 2020 rally. I enjoyed the Hayfork location and it looks to be even better with the remodeling they have done.

Sorry peeps, but I'm out for this rally.  I've had enough of Oregon and I'm getting the hell out of here for good.

...gonna need a new handle...  maybe ex-pdxfj?

Portland (PDX is Portland Airport) appears to be f'ing crazy and not really part of Oh-re-gun at all.  Maybe you should give the dry side of the Cascades a try...  Bend/Redmond area is on fire growing at ~10% per year right now.  The money and energy in this area is making it hard for me to stay retired already...  Bunch of ex-Si Valley folks have moved to Bend and are trying to figure out how to spend their money, building estates and starting businesses appear to be the primary outlets.  Redmond (RDM) is our "major" airport (like 5 gates i think)...  so maybe you're destined to be RDMFJ?

Sorry it isn't looking like you can make it, but a reminder that late arrivals due to last minute changes in plans will be welcomed...  the campsites/platforms/rooms will not be full and I bet you'd love Hayfork when it's dry (fingers crossed).  Either way, hope your adventure goes well and we'll get to see you in 2019.

Garth, well you’ll be missed. Statistically moving house and getting married are the two most stressful things in life. It’s debatable, of course, as to which is the most stressful. I’ve got them as level pegging. Anyway, at the other end of the stress scale is the Fj rally camp fire. You might need to show up just to balance out your 2019.

Frank catching up on whatt I have missed I saw a post about the Trinity River and fishing, my second favorite hobby. Never fished in Northern Cal do mostly offshore; but can you ask about fishing in the area will come early or leave late for good fishing.

Mike!  I was wondering if you'd finally had enough of us.  Glad to hear you'll be there this (hopefully dry) year.  It will be a good get together no matter the weather.

I've never done any fishing in that area...  I was maybe referring to a retirement hobby I'm trying to pick up.  Have you seen the Al jet boats chasing up whitewater to find their fishing spot?  I got somewhat of a project 1988 23' Duckworth Magnum Jet Sled that has been repowered with a 8.1L 450Hp Vortec marine engine and an American Turbine SPR310 or something like that...  in a 3300# aluminum hull.  I'm working through issues and should have it in the water within a couple weeks.  It's exceptionally well setup for lake fishing as well and I live 10 minutes from a launch to lake Billy Chinook (look it up)...  Wanna go fishing in Oregon?

Here's the trip to the fishing hole...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG-nmf5LJjM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG-nmf5LJjM)

Frank

PS - with the off record votes from Diane and a couple others, that's 20+ on committed deposits!  I'm working details with Kent, but I'll be posting a "Hayfork is a go" message instructions for placing deposits in the next couple days.  Shortly thereafter I'll get a tracker going so we can get the details nailed down (days, rooms, meals, big vs little spoon, etc.).

I know I missed the voting - but I can let you know I will not be attending this years rally.   - Sadly it will be the first rally I will be missing since I started going.   If it was closer I would blast to it on Thursday evening but its too far for that  --- and I don't have the number of days off this year due to a European commitment to leave any earlier.

Things could change -- and if they do I will let all know.

I hope they do change Steve...  You can pretty much show up at the last minute this time around as there will be space and food for you since they can handle a couple hundred guests and we'll be the only group there.  I remember following you around last time in Hayfork trying to remember how to ride in the rain...  I'd just gotten back on the motorbike after a 20+ year hiatus.  Thanks again!

Update on process:  We are past the number of deposits to get us locked in, so Hayfork is a go.  Kent has been traveling and this has delayed my posting the details of placing the deposit, choosing the accommodations/food, etc.  Kent is back this week, so I should have details out within a few days.

I don't have it -- last I saw it was flynt -- I think I gave it to Flynt two years ago -- although he performed the task beautifully I don't remember him wearing the shirt. - but I will check to be safe.

Who has the SHIRT?

I believe Andy has it. The last recollection of the shirt, and who was graced with it was from college Coloma.

If you recall, Andy was the first one out of the clutch lever holding competition. :rofl2: :bomb:

He was in the UK for the 2018 wcr so he is still obligated for 2019.

Seems like Andy and I talked about it at the RPM Fall Rally a few months ago, but I really don't remember...

Sorry for the long gap in posts...  took a while to get to Kent, then a while to get off my ass.  Here's the current tracker for Hayfork:

Kent and I are sharing this tracking document, so either of us can update.  He prefers deposits to be made directly to Bar 717 Ranch, preferably by check, and will update the document accordingly.  He also suggests we leave the detailed room/platform selections to them...  they know the best rooms/platforms and will optimize our placement relative to the dining hall.  We should specify preferences (like Ramos and ZOA sleeping together), then let Kent suggest the arrangements.

So next step is to get the deposits in by 3/1/19...  please send deposits to:

Bar 717 Ranch
Star Route Box 150,
Hyampom Rd,
Hayfork, CA 96041

I'll update status along the way and let everyone know when $1000 has been received by Kent and we're locked in.  Please send additional information to me on PM to clarify the (?) indicated above...  this stuff isn't critical, just get the deposits in as a priority.  Once we hit the deposit, the whole place is reserved for us and we can fix dates/accommodations/food and be pretty flexible on changes along the way.

Frank

PS - I'm using our FJ names for simplicity on tracking...  please reference your site name as listed above in the comments box of your check so Kent can track along easily.

Do we need include our rooming preference on the deposit check?

No, just help me get it right in the table.  Once deposits are in and we're confirmed, Kent can take the table and make some trial arrangements complete with descriptions.  We'll likely communicate more privately on that part, but we'll get it all sorted by Go Time and still have room for surprise additions.

For now, please send Kent the deposit and PM me changes to the table...  I'll capture inputs (thanks to those that have already PM'd some changes) and try to get an updated table posted within a few days.

I have a FZR USD front end I’ve been trying to get to Dave for awhile now.
I’m thinking that San Dimas Mike can bring it up to Hayfork.

I will definitely have room to bring the forks back to Kansas with me. That puts them much closer to Dave. If he attends the Central Rally in Arkansas, that would bring them even closer.

I have not updated the tracker for Hayfork, since we have not gotten all the deposits promised on this list as of yet...  I'm pretty sure Kent is OK with giving us a bit more time, but as of tomorrow we're technically "out of contract" since we committed to have $1000 deposit in place by 3/1 (we're at ~$650 by my count).  My $100 is in and I've received PMs as requested from several people, but we are a few hundred short of securing this venue for certain...  I'm not prepared to cover the required deposit, so until we are at $1000 in Kent's hands there's no guarantee they will host us as planned.  Those committed to sending the deposit but haven't done so yet should do it TODAY so we can count on Bar 717 Ranch hosting our 2019 WCR.

Please get the deposits in ASAP (3/1 was our committed deadline)...  send deposits to:

Bar 717 Ranch
Star Route Box 150,
Hyampom Rd,
Hayfork, CA 96041

I'm getting an updated list from Kent tomorrow to see where we are relative to the $1000 commit.  He's a nice guy and will give us some leeway I think, but let's get the deposit in and guarantee we won't lose this venue.

Frank

It's old-school. The folks up at Hayfork are out in the country without much in the way of internet access or cell phone coverage, so they like things simple. Most of us in the 'Burbs would just PayPal or Venmo, etc to send some money to someone. I actually didn't have any checks, and had to order them before I could send one.

You two are paid up as are the others who spoke up here...  we are sitting at $850 received by Kent, so not at $1000 yet.  It would be good if those that are still procrastinating** to send in their deposit.  I'll talk to Kent on Monday (3/11) and would like to tell him the checks are in the mail and move on to the next phase.  I don't think we're in any danger of losing the venue at this point and a BIG THANKS to those that have risen to the occasion thus far.

After the deposit meets the minimum, Kent will be open to additional sign-ups made directly with him and he will continue to collect deposits.  He'll also work out the accommodations and we'll publish the full sign-up list to date when we open up the direct signups.  Any fine-tuning of accommodations will also be done directly with him, so I can be out of the way.  I'll remain on the side to help sort anything that comes up...

Frank

Quick update...  Kent has confirmed $1000 in deposits have been received and we're locked in.  The kitchen remodel has been slowed a bit by all the rain this year, but he's confident they'll be ready for us.  I'll get the updated list with nights and accommodations published again over the weekend and send to Kent as well, then I'll get out of the way and let the details and additional signups be worked with him directly.

I'm also getting some additional ride suggestions from Kent, but those familiar with the area should also chime in...  we need some replacement leads for the rides each day since our usual planning staff is reduced this year with Randy and Pat not attending.  Volunteers?

Final Update...  but first a reminder.

Routes++:

Here is the current capture of deposits paid and accommodations requested.  ALL FURTHER UPDATES SHOULD GO TO KENT AT BAR 717 DIRECTLY!

With the event fast approaching, we should think about how we're going to organize rides and such this year...  Randy and Pat are not attending and leave a big gap in ride leadership.  I'm guessing Can Ron will lead his familiar group and that the "Fast" group will likely stick together, but a couple of volunteers to work with Kent, study up a bit, and organize a ride or two might be helpful.

Frank

PS - How can RPM not be on the list of attendees?  I know Randy can't attend, but doesn't that mean Robert has to be there to represent (and repair everybody's bikes of course)...?

Frank, thank you very much for all the work you have performed to get the Rally together and dealing with a bunch of us procrastinators.

I don't like riding fast on roads that I do not know so maybe my position should be as Pat's replacement?  I suppose we can work out details on Thurs night.  I plan to spend most of Thurs riding up from the City.  Hopefully I'll arrive in the afternoon.  If anyone else is interested in riding up 101 N to 36, LMK.

After googling the area around the routes I don't see any way to shorten them without doubling back. There are a few cow-paths cutting through the mountains but they look like they turn to dirt roads at certain points. Both routes are longer in miles and time than the ride in to Hayfork from Reno.beautiful country but a long days ride on the weekend I bet.Maybe Kent knows if the small connecting roads like Cecilville road are worth taking.

I'll apologize in advance for asking, it's probably on this thread somewhere.

No issue asking questions...  and this is a good one.  I'm sure there are more floating around...  I had a PM asking if alcohol is permitted at Bar 717 for example.  I'm happy to report that they are fine with BYOB.  I'll answer whatever I can and help get an answer otherwise.

As for your question...  Kent says we each take care of our bill with him when we're there.  The advance deposits will go toward your bill and you settle up when you''re leaving.  I'd advise folks with a fixed plan/charge to pay when you have a few extra minutes during the weekend and avoid the rush.  For accommodations, he will place you where he thinks best, but you are free to change it...  you may want to call and discuss your needs with him.

G’day mates. Much to my regret I will not be attending Hayfork, though my bike will be there with Ron Chase at the helm.
It will be available for sale after the event and I encourage any perspective buyers to talk to Fred or Ron about this sweet ride. Would love to get half of what it cost me, but even then it’s probly over the top.... but I am definitely selling it and much of my camping equipment due to the expense of transport to Australia.
Wishing you all a great and safe ride.  :drinks:

In two weeks we will be in waking up in Hayfork.

Will someone please turn off the sprinklers. weather.com has it drying out just before we get there, my fingers are crossed.

See you all there.

My fingers are crossed too...  I was part of the "drowned rat" crew last time around.  Lots of folks just skipped based on the forecast.  If you come and it rains, we will still have a good time riding in the wet and/or warming with a beer by the fire.

Kurt beat me to a message about being 2 weeks out...  I hope everyone has talked with Kent at the Ranch and has their preferences all worked out.  Even folks that will camp should give him a call to make sure he knows what's going on with you and can maybe help find the best spots.

My stable is nearing rally readiness...  Wizard's valves are adjusted and Stormy goes under the knife on Sunday.  Both bike are running well and we're ready for a weekend away.  Looking forward to seeing whoever makes it.  Everyone be safe getting there!

Frank

Hayfork was my first WCR, and I have only missed one WCR since then. I am eager to return and enjoy the festivities again, rain or shine.

Hayfork was my first WCR...

Mine too...  I had met Randy already and ran into him on hwy5 heading up.  We learned together that stopping to eat as you're heading in to Hayfork late is a good idea.  The restaurant in town was ok and it did the job.  I also found the local "general store" carried men's underwear which I had forgotten to pack.  Monkey man forgot his riding boots as I recall...  but he can finish that story.

I mostly remember sitting among the group, next to the fire, and hearing Andy ride in and then drape himself in the Brit flag and parade about the place looking for a beer.  I felt lucky to have found this group of characters to ride with...  I'm looking forward to being there again as well...  beautiful spot wet or dry.

I talked to Kent yesterday and we're pretty much set on how this will work.  Not everyone (in fact, almost nobody) talked to Kent to get your lodging details worked out, so he and I went through the list to make preliminary assignments.  Kent will have all of the guest rooms and 4 of the platform tents ready, along with camping spaces, so he can work the details as we arrive.  I'll help to make sure we don't miss any of the finer details (like getting the honeymoon suite all set for ZN and Midget).

The kitchen/dining area complete with new fireplace is ready to use...  they've been using the kitchen already as the exterior work continues.  They'll have some cosmetic gaps around the hardscape stuff, but the facility is fully functional and the fireplace is "a big improvement" over what was already a great feature of this venue.

The only real planning gap now is around the rides...  Kent had sent the two LONG rides (too long), but he said the local roads are now melted off enough that we will have choices to make shorter loops.  I'm hoping to discuss with him in more detail when I get there next Th and have some suggestions.

Get those projects wrapped up gentlemen...  It's Rally time!

Frank

We went over the details of my stay, and payment arrangements.
She spoke to Kent directly earlier this week for me, and called me back.  All is good.

Haha, this reminds me of a joke I heard sittin on the fantail of a destroyer, or halfway through a pitcher of bullfrog on the patio of a bar in the Phillippines, I'm not sure which...

A soyboy wanna-be ANTIFA shim gets arrested for disorderly conduct when he rips a MAGA hat off a wheelchair-bound WWII vet at a "peace rally", and gets thrown in a holding cell with "Bubba". After a couple hours of silent awkwardness, Bubba says, "So, soyboy, we gotta figure out who's gonna be the Momma and who's gonna be the Daddy, so I'll let you decide..."

Soyboy sits quietly for a minute, and finally realizes he can decide his fate, and pipes up with confidence, "I'll be the Daddy."

Bubba says "Sounds good to me, get over here and start suckin Momma's d..."   :rofl2:

I hope everyone who is able to attnd the 2019 WCR has a great time. Stay safe in your travels to, during and from the event.

Unfortunately, My wife and I are not available to attend this year. I was tasked to be one of the coordinators for the largest event held in the City of Modesto every year; Graffiti Night, 2019 and the other events of the weekend. https://americangraffitifestival.com/nmk/ (https://americangraffitifestival.com/nmk/)

Graffiti weekend is major because George Lucas was born, raised and graduated from Modesto. In fact he was an underclassman of my mom at Downey High School. The movie American Graffiti was based on his growing up in Modesto and graduating in 1962: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069704/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069704/)

I have been attending meeting weekly for the past month and will be in meetings this week and getting prepared over the weekend.

This commitment means the WCR is out for us this year. If it wasn't so far from us, we might have tried to take a drive up to meet everyone for one evening, but at 300 miles and 6 hours, I can't make it happen.

If anyone is still in the area and wants to be a part of the Graffiti Weekend it is a good time. It draws people from all over the world and presents more than 1000 classic cars and 25-30k people in attendance.

Again, have fun at the WCR, we regret not being able to attend.

Randy - RPM

Good morning Ron!

Later today I'm heading over to the palatial R.P.M. shop for a set of tires then returning to here (Walnut Creek).

If things stay settled here, I'm planning to leave Thursday morning, somewhat early - going up Hwy. 101 & over Hwy 36 & up Hwy 3.

I'll P.M. this afternoon as things develop.

Midget.

WARNING!!
To anyone who replaced the right foot peg mount bolt with a longer one and attached the rear brake torque arm to it.
Mine just failed going home from the WCR. Sheared off at
the frame and spun the caliper around the axle.
Luckily it happened at very slow speed at a freeway exit stop sign.
The bolt I used was a grade 8 socket head cap screw that I obviously thought would hold up.
Anyone with this modification beware!!!

Just rolled into Wichita. I dropped Kurt off in Salt Lake City last night.

Rick, if there's any confusion, I'm referring to the road leading to the Bar 717 Ranch.  About half of it was relatively fast as it went thru the valley and next to the creek.  The other half was as crooked as a dog's hind leg and littered with gravel.  After Mother Nature's show on Sat, the road had more rocks and branches too.  Oh joy!

Welcome home Fred.  Thanks for for coming West.

Joe

Joe, Here's the 20 - minute video of Hyampum Road to Hayfork.  Gimme a timestamp if you're interested in my analysis.  In general, I'm just cruising, not really riding "angry", so there isn't much technical to say.  One thing I would highly recommend, especially in these rally situations where you are riding an unfamiliar road, is to always stay in a lower gear than you might normally, and use rpm's and engine braking to your advantage.  This, combined with judicious trail braking (https://youtu.be/gPE67XqGsV4) (link to good explanation) should keep you from having those "moments" in a turn that decreases radius faster than you anticipated.

Yup, one more graveyard tonight and a swingshift (12-22) Thursday and I'm done for the week.

I watched the video.  You are nine minutes faster to town than I was.

I hate working nights.

I've worked nights since I went into the Navy in 1982.

Great subject!  Below is a post when the topic came up some time ago....   Following andyoutandabout at this years WCR this method proved itself several times!!!

Re: Braking Into Turns

Some time ago there was a discussion about Braking upon approaching and entering a turn.
As with other subjects, a variety of opinions were expressed; and as with other subjects, some of those opinions were inconsequential to the actual discussion.

Of those pertinent to the discussion, some stated that all Braking should take place PRIOR to commencing the turn itself.
Perhaps in the theoretical world of oils, hard tires & such that would be acceptable, however in the real world of unknowns, such as entering a turn too fast or dreaded decreasing radius turns, the automobile that does not see the motorcyclist, the debris on the road surface encountered unexpectedly, the animal that appears seemingly from out of nowhere et al; such comments are as inconsequential as the various unsubstantiated assertions.

Encounter any of the above scenarios (and a myriad of others!) and the compromises such as those made with the tire upon which you do not plan to exceed its’ capabilities are negated by circumstances unexpectedly forced upon you; there is no allowance for not expecting the unexpected.

As with counter steering practice, braking drills & judicious application of throttle when riding in the rain or sand strewn surfaces, etcetera – correct application of both front and rear brakes while entering turns under CONTROLLED circumstances is important.  When unexpectedly, that touch of additional measure of braking is needed, there is at least a chance that the motorcyclist remains in control.

To that extent, brake indicator lights were installed in several different locations.  The blue light is the front & the red light is for the rear.

The first part of the video is of modest speeds, the next part is of more open sweepers & then along the rim of a canyon.  It closes with less modest speeds over an exceptionally rough road meandering through a forested area.
The original footage was lost to the ether during editing – this version is less incisive & concise however I trust it shows the principle involved.

Please note:  No suggestions are given nor any advice proffered and certainly no dogma involved, just noting an option.

Ride safe,

Midget.

Damn it, I miss seeing my friends. Looks like a good time was had by all!

Howdy Leon!

You were missed too!  Also not arriving were The OZ group from the Sacramento area & LA Mike....  hope all are all well.

Thanks to ZOA NOM for making the arrangements & his generosity as well.  Special mention to Frank B. for following through with the reservation arrangements - as always things went smoothly because of his efforts.

Timely rain made for some clean & fast road surfaces - Mr. Ort and I were rained on fairly well yet by next day the roads were dry...

Much thanks to all the long distance travelers: kind Donna & Derick, Kurt & Aviation Fred not to mention elegant Diane and the fellow she brought with her (!).  Out from Colorado came Firehawk with his refurbished FJ... Lovely Tina and San Dimas Mike brought along Monkey from southern California; the Reno clan & Jeff with a FJ towed by a Volkswagen (!) along with a large number "the usual suspects" from the greater Bay Area made for a great 2019 WCR.

The riding was all top shelf and then some!  Running with andyoutandabout made getting lost (if only temporarily lost) an almost magical experience - both FJ's running very well and traffic nonexistent made for a run although not as long, almost as satisfying as our Colorado run down though the canyon.

The following day another great ride with Rick, Frank & Diane, Monkey Mark and San Dimas Mike out to the coast via the Hwy 36 & finding a nice lace for lunch.  Then returning on the Hwy 299 and down Hwy 3.

Great conversations around the campfires each night and even a pair of drones flying around with marker lights illuminating them.  A most spectacular thunder & lightning on the final night made for a nice ending to the Rally.

Everyone ride safe...

Mike

Glad to know you made it home OK, Monkey...

Here's some video from the run out Hiway 36 to the coast on Saturday... Just a taste... I'm behind Monkey and The Midget on the long downhill section early in the ride.

That's my beloved Diane waving at the workers as we rode out of the Ranch...  (caption says Tina I believe?).  Tina was likely waving as well...

Sorry about that Frank, I marked the raw video to add the text and forgot to go back in the final processing. I'll get better. It's actually Tina waving to US on the way out Saturday morning. San Dimas Mike rode solo.

BTW, weren't we supposed to vote on the 2020 WCR location before we left?

I made it safely back to Denver area, rolling in front of my house around 7:30pm on Monday.

Had no issues except for a broken tent-pole-end, and a slightly annoying "Hot-Start" slow-crank issue with my FJ.

The service and care provided by the Staff at Bar-717 was second to none!

Riding was fantastic! And seeing everyone was even better.

The only thing that would have made it better for me would have been the addition of Leon..............You certainly were missed!

I'll post up some pictures when I get them loaded on my home PC.

Donna and I got home this evening. We took our time going north and found some amazing campsites in central Oregon. Rode some of the Cascade Lakes Highway and the amazing Newberry Caldera National Monument. (Thanks to Frank and Dianne for the suggestions.)

The staff at the bar 717 were awesome, love that venue!

It was great to see many old friends and also to meet some new ones. I must agree with Alan Steve, Leon levels were much too low at this rally! You were definitely missed my friend!

So glad everyone made it home safely!

Derek (and Donna)

Diane and I left Hayfork and went to Truckee for two nights, then went down to SF Bay Area to pick up our last car that was still in CA.  A buddy in Walnut Creek made an offer I couldn't refuse for a nice Featherlite flatbed trailer, so we used his lift to raise my trailer, remove wheels, and place it on the flatbed...  Here's a couple pics of the reverse process on my lift...

FJs hanging by a thread...

Safely back on the ground and ready to unload from the next trailer...

I'm delighted Hayfork worked out this time...  the 3S to 36W to 101N to 299E to 3S loop on Saturday was absolutely epic with the most high speed sweeper count of any day's worth of riding in my memory.

I committed to looking for other Bar 717 type facilities for next year's WCR, so I'll hopefully have some suggestions over the next few weeks...  Going to be hard to top this one however...

Frank
