Title: Tank bag
Post by: Tuned forks on April 23, 2019, 09:39:12 PM
Does anyone use SW Motech tank bags?  If so, what are your thoughts please.  I'm looking at a Sport Evo.

Wow Joe, that's an expensive tank bag !!!!

Not sure if you get them in the USA, but we use Oxford Products Sports Tank Bags. They have a magnetic base flap that works perfectly on the FJ (but does come with a strap system for plastic tank bikes - I use the strap mount with the bag on my Aprilia RSV), they also have an expandable main section, together with an additional mid-section that can be zipped in or out between the top one and the base. There are 2 longitudinal pockets on the sides and a zip-off rear pocket that's handy for wallets/phones, as well as a clear top map pocket and rain cover. The tank bag also has attached straps that mean it can be carried as a ruck-sack. They're brilliant and less than half the price of the SW bag, if you can get them there.

You can just see it in "2 level" format in this picture

And in "1 level" format on both bikes in this picture

Maybe worth a look if you can get them there ?

I have something similar in looks, with magnets, and works fantastic.

I use this. A bargain at $120, comes with a rain cover (rarely needed, only in a downpour). Expands taller with circumferential zipper at the base. Backpack straps built in. I use the magnetic base without the straps. Also shown are push-thru holes for charger cord so your phone can stay inside the bag out of the heat.

Very durable as well. I've had mine for close to a decade. Not one single issue. Still as good as new. It even survived the bike that burned. Wouldn't have if I was using the straps to mount it.

I have no experience with the SW Motech tank bags. I do know that Twisted Throttle is a serious accessories company. Watching some of their product videos, I would believe that they thoroughly test most if not all of the gear they sell. The SW-Motech line of gear is close to being top of the market and very much used in Europe. I would say, if you like the bag and the mounting system, go for it.

I have the smallest version of the SW Motech that mounts on a ring bolted to the gas cap.  It's on my FZ-09 so a small bag was the only viable option for me.  It's a very good design that keeps the top of the tank pristine.  Only issue I've had is that about once a year the latching mechanism takes a drop of oil to keep it functioning smoothly.

Like Motofun, I also use the strapless/magnetic-less ring style, only mfg by GIVI.  There are bigger ones and smaller ones but this one is just right for me.

Another benefit is that it's easy to transfer from one bike to another like the magnetic style.  My TDM has a quirky shaped gas tank so I purchased an additional ring and mounted it on that.

This reminds me of the good ol' days when rktmanfj (Randy T) and Travis398 used to spar over the Colts/Patriots in the "Ohh it's on now" threads.

The days when guys could give each other shit and no one got offended. If they did, they resolved it without having to whine to everyone else. That's why rick has to bring the Merlot and leave the whine at home.

I'm not sure if Rick took any, but I missed the opportunity. Next time for sure.

The initial reports is the car handled better and was more consistent through the whole race.
Unfortunately, we did not get all the way through the set-up and Rick had some more to do when he got home. But, if he did that right we should be able to start tweaking it now for even more improvement.

It's ALWAYS fun, and never malicious.

The car is definitely much better balanced, and handling better as a result. Tire temps and lap times have improved significantly, as has my place in the pack. Randy's setup knowledge is invaluable, and I really appreciated his time and effort. The effort is continuing as I dial in the setup. The car is up on the scales at the moment, awaiting fine adjustment of toe and minor ride height. Also plan to re-measure corner weights following some weight loss, beginning with a lexan windshield and replacement of a heavy fuel pump cover plate under the car. With the final tweaks, I should be able to make the fine-tuning adjustments at the track with swaybar settings and tire pressures. I'm going to Buttonwillow in a few weeks, so I'll have some more data following that race weekend.

Oh, and Merlot is a little manly, Randy, you strike me as more of a White Zinfandel...  :bomb:

Buddy, when you start driving a real race car, your ball size will increase to manly dimensions. When you start racing a real race powered by an FJ motorcycle engine, they turn into brass.

You have to be careful when sitting down to take a crap, those brass balls constantly fall into the water.

I saw those B&J wine coolers in your trailer, who knew strawberry daiquiri was your favorite. I'm sure the zin is close by... :unknown:

Real race car drivers drink manly wines like the Merlot.

Hey Joe, quick tip - use the search engine of your choice (not Google, they're communists) and search for threads here in the FJOwners forum by using the "site" modifier. It works for any site, and will yield much better search results than the built-in search function.

example - search for SW Motech by typing "SW Motech site:FJowners.com" into the search bar.
