Title: LED headlight bulb - recommendation
Post by: MOTOMYSZOR on August 12, 2019, 01:06:38 PM
I have installed in my FJ this type of LED bulb:

It is very well visible in day light for other road users .... but that's all.
After nightfall it's range is very poor, there is no difference between HI and LOW beam. Luminous flux is "broken" what cause blinding other drivers......

Maybe You know other LED bulbs without those side effects?

Hi
Before replacing bulb, most important is using a relays for the headlight, with original wiring the voltage at the bulb is too low, I put in a relays and a LED (Beamtec) bulb and the change is radical, at night it is much better then the regular bulb.
Cheers, Tom.

Many have gone before you. Generally, I don't know of anyone who has found a significant advantage to an LED headlight conversion with regard to improving the light emitted on the road. This is mainly due to the shape of the reflector inside the light, which the LED's are just not optimized for. I returned to the factory style incandescent bulb (with relay, of course), in a 80/100 watt version that seems to work very well. I think it's a Sylvania Super White bulb from just about any auto parts store. The 80w low beam is a nuisance for some, but I'd rather be seen than not seen. I added two LED driving lights to the engine protection bars that are wired to the high beam switch. When I go to high beams, I can't outrun the lights at 100mph.

Here's a video clip of the view (https://i.imgur.com/1wnyKR1.mp4). The first couple seconds is low beam, and you can see the difference when I hit the high beam switch.

Like many others, you will find the reflector in your headlight negates most of what you're looking for. In any case, consider including the relay. Good luck.

If you look closely at a halogen bulb you'll see it has a shield above one element so it directs light to a specific place in the headlight, most LEDs bulbs don't have that fitted, that's probably why they shoot light everywhere. I took that into account when buying mine and settled on an Osram LED that has shields built in above the chips to simulate a halogen bulb. Still haven't ridden in the dark yet to see how far they throw, but leaving for work at the crack of dawn seems to light up the road and signs ok, something to keep in mind.

If you're looking for daylight visibility, this is what I ended up with for my FJR, as my city commute needs all the help it can get.  I have them mounted on the forks.
