Title: 2013 ECSR
Post by: ddlewis on March 06, 2013, 07:03:28 PM
It's March already, shouldn't there be some "Boone is soone" talk going on by now?  Like to make sure somebody else is coming before I mark up the calendar at work.

Steve,

third week of May in Boone NC at the KOA campground.  14-18 of May.  Try to make it, lot of fun.  I think this is my 10th year.   :good2:

Carey/Eric, I'm going to either ride in Wed or Thursday via B.R.parkway.  I'm up for lunch at Mabry Mill if anybody else is..  Anybody headed south who wants to catch up for ride down let me know.

i'll be there.  arriving tuesday leaving sunday.

make sure to mention my name or the FJ motorcycle group when you call Joann to get the group discount.  she reserves all the kabins for us up until a week or so before that week, then frees up any remaining kabins to unlucky folks who don't attend fj rallies.

If plans come to fruition I will be arriving on Friday for the weekend. The job that has interfered with this has moved to early May. I'll be riding back from Vegas beginning on May 10th and planned my Southerly route to past through Boone. Just need approval from the boss at home. Wish me luck!

Man, I don't think its going to work.  Thursday, my 80 year old mother fell at the hair salon and ended up on the hospital and having surgery to have plates, screws and pins put in her wrist.  She can't drive for 6 weeks.  So we'll be doing resupply for her.  Plus, furloughs start in two weeks.  I was really hoping Congress would get their heads out of their collective asses and do their jobs for once, but it ain't happening.

So, as of today, I'll be bowing out, yet again, from the ECSR.  Dammit.   :flag_of_truce:

Vstrom fully loaded this year and no other bikes. Wed to Sunday. I will not hang out with the likes of Canadian smugglers that ride British mustard puffy seated bikes. Not like I would single anyone out but I do have standards. Watchooo got?

Actually, mine was out in Jan-Mar, but the slave cylinder failed... Parts are en route from RPM.

Carbs from the '90 are headed out to RPM soon.

I even fixed the brakes on the XT, so there.    :blum1:

Don't know how you made do without a garage in Indy.. that would suck.  Havent' packed or pm'd bike yet but not much to do. I've been riding a fair amount so bike in pretty good shape.   oil/filter(s) maybe check valve gap.  tires good.  My old cheapie mp3 player finally croaked probably replace that.

Looks like we've gone from no Nancy's to both Nancy's..  alright! :good2:

I even fixed the brakes on the XT, so there.    :blum1:

It's really nice having a heated garage!    :good:

Is your stuff packed for Boone (don't forget the Beano this year  :bad:)?

Beano for you?  gladly!

Looks like we've gone from no Nancy's to both Nancy's..  alright! :good2:

When I didn't have a garage available, the bikes lived in a storage unit.  A PITA for sure, but they were safe and out of the weather, and it was only 5 minutes away.  The FJ will be PM'ed this weekend, and new Superbrace installed.

Good deal that N & N will be there!   :good:

Sorry to hear about your Walkman.   :sorry:  Hope you had all those Lawrence Welk tunes backed up somewhere.

Still up in the air for NancyR (ME). Ain't quite sure how the bikes are getting there. I guess it will be hashed out this afternoon when Jeff gets home.
But the cardinal rule of no working on bikes before the rally bit him in the tush.....the choke cable on mine had been sticky and he was trying to remedy that last night and OOPS the darn thing broke. So of course we all know that with 20-something year old bikes you don't run down to your local mc shop for a replacement. He took his off his fj and put it on mine. He said he was going to Napa and buy an auto one and see if he could make it work.

It's been one of those weeks....

Well, I'm in for the early shift.  Andrew finished exams yesterday and is driving back to Atlanta today with a carload of stuff.  He flies back to RDU Monday mid-day to pick up his EX500 and ride to Boone.  I'm riding north from Atlanta Monday to meet him there.

We're leaving Thursday because he flies to Germany with his mom Friday.  Weather.com says it's supposed to be 37F (3C) Monday night and somewhat less cold, but still cold, Tuesday night.  Wednesday night should be perfect camping weather, but with the cold for the first two nights and not wanting to pack and assemble/disassemble a tent for one night, I decided "screw it, I'm sleeping indoors three nights."  So, we have a Kabin for those three nights.

In fine FJ Rally tradition, Andrew's bike may or may not need a rear tire in the 1,000 miles he'll probably cover in the next week.  So far, all his riding has been on the Kenda, or whatever was on there when he bought it.  I can't wait until he gets a real tire for back there...

I may be coming back through Boone Friday night by car.  I still haven't got John (The Beer Scientist) back on two wheels again, his rebuilt carbs sit on my workbench waiting to go back on his Virago 750 and I'll be lucky to get my own bike packed and ready, let alone get John's assembled.  He and I are planning to head to Baltimore to visit my old college roommate Kevin who is having a bit of chemo lately, and we'll take a car in the hopes of possibly getting Kevin out of the house a bit.  Kevin won't ride on the back of a bike, and in my 25 years of Motorcycle Proselytizing I still haven't been able to get ahold of one to teach him to ride.  (I still haven't given up hope for evetually, but this won't be the summer for Kevin to learn to ride.)

My friend Dave from work, the guy who brought the GTS-1000 to Tellico (also the guy who made Andrew's & my Epic Ducati Adventure happen) may be able to get there for the weekend, but we may not overlap this weekend at all.

Can't wait to see you guys!

I'll have some tools to replace a tire if needed.

I *just* finished a work assignment and am about to get out from behind this 'puter for a while.  Job 1 is to try to diagnose the Maxima's misfire and excessive fuel use (one or more coils? one or more stuck injectors?  Most of that stuff has 200,000 miles on it) and then I'll see to an oil change and hydraulic fluid flush for the FJ.  I'm ashamed to note that it has less than 105,000 on it; it turned 100,000 on the way home from Boone last year
(<-- see photo) and is still on the same tires.  And oil filter.

I'm on the road Monday, in a Kabin Monday night.  Cannot WAIT.

Stu, I want to hear the new bike without exhaust inserts.  I don't know who that poor deaf sonofabitch Leo Vince is, but I sure liked his exhaust system on the Ducati 916 I rode last fall.

same here, oil+filter last night.   Also I dropped in some off-brand bead balancer - ie dyna beads.  never tried and always doubted.   Fun stuffing a couple ounces through your valve stems.     Now we shall see once and for all.. I will not hesitate to call bs on these things if I don't see any difference.

Hey stu, what's up with a "pair" of exhaust inserts?  Last i checked, drz's have one exhaust.. You trying to pull something?  whatchoo got?

Looks like there's only three of us coming.  My nephew hurt his shoulder and will not be coming, which brings our average displacement numbers up to over 700CC.  I put a new front tire on a few days back, I went with a PR2.  I went for a quick spin today, seems fine.  Still need to wipe the tire down with thinner, and scrub them in a bit before I push them.

We hit the road Wednesday PM and will arrive Thursday.

I was just thinking that I may not recognize many of you by face -don't be surprised/ insulted/ butt hurt if I ask your name.  -we really need "name is ____ / my FJ owners moniker is ______ "shirts like the left coasters are doing.

Boone is Soon.

I can't even recall seeing horseshoes played in years.  It's all Cornhole these days.  Unfortunately that's no more motorcycle-transport friendly than horseshoes or I'd bring mine.  I'll check with Calvin, if he's coming I might toss mine on his trailer.

Either way, I have tendonitis so bad right now probably couldn't play either.  Might have to drink beer left handed.  Don't worry though, I'll work something out on the beer. :)

Horseshoes....hmmm....how many do you want. What size do you want? I have PLENTY of horseshoes. Just not the kind you use to have a game of horseshoes with. The largest that one of my ponies wears is a size 2 and then they get smaller. I think Joanne at the KOA has horse shoes.

I just got home last night from working a horse show up in New Jersey, so today is delivering horses to day camp for the week and then find all my stuff for riding, cooking and the like. We'll pull out VERY early (hopefully) in the morning. Be up there late tomorrow afternoon.

Firewood has been ordered. Mr. Eddie is just waiting on a phone call as to who will be there to have it delivered and paid for. I won't be there in time.

Yea.. and to a woman, imagine that. I thought he was addicted to heated banana peels!

I have talked to Calvin, he doesn't think he will be attending this year, Frank is busy with work and trying to build his house, so he might not be there either. My back has been messed up for some time now and I have been out of work for the past 5 weeks. I have seen several doctors and I am slowly recovering. You guys know I prefer to ride down and camp, but don't think riding six hours each way on the bike is a good idea right now. I'm still on the fence, it really depends on if the steroids kick in and bring me any pain relief. Sadly I have not attended a rally since my stoke and am doing quite well other than my back. Ever since the first official rally at Deals gap years ago you folks have become my other family and its time to enjoy the fire and friendship once again. I  hope it works out...

Eric-

Backs are tricky and I'm not at all sure that this admittedly unsolicited advice, will help, but I find that keeping limber/ stretching helps keep my back, pain-free.  Once there is an injury, all bets are off you need time to heal.  But, I do know that when I am doing a lot of heavy lifting, where my back is subject to potentially being hurt, I stretch before and after I do so.  I know this is subject to abuse but I'll say it anyway...  I actually have a Pilates ball I use to stretch backwards over.  Seems to make a BIG difference.

Take that advice for what it's worth.  Sorry you'll not be there to ride! Hope to see you there anyway.

Andrew & I both got back a little bit ago.

We had a bit of traffic through Boone going south on 221, so I made an Executive Direction Decision (that turned out okay for once!) and we hopped on the Blue Ridge Parkway, taking that south to Asheville.  It was nearly empty of cars, but there were a lot of bicycles.  Makes sense, weekdays have no traffic there, so it's a great place to ride before most schools let out during the week.  Riding the Parkway was incredible, as always.  And in this case, it was probably as quick as any other way.

Route 211 crosses every other road in North Carolina at least four times.  I saw half a dozen interchanges along the BRP.  I'm going to blame Route 221 for me always getting lost.

I picked the wrong Route 25 ("business") and we had stoplights through Hendersonville.  (So much for blaming Route 221.)  We picked up the fast Route 25 ("limited access") south of there and took SC11 back to I-85.  Andrew & I split off at I-285 and Roswell Road, me going north and him going south.  He got to his mom's quickly I imagine, with all traffic going the other way.  I got a bit of traffic going to the burbs.

I need to confirm with John and make plans to get him and get back up there tomorrow night.  I hope you're all safe back at camp and/or back at dinner.  It was great seeing everyone, can't wait to see the other subset of "everyone" tomorrow night.

Y'all ride well.

Eric, sorry to hear about your back.  Wrenched mine two weekends ago, just getting back to normal.  Not bad enough not to ride to work, but I don't think it would feel good on an all day trek.

Hoffman and a woman.  Good thing David isn't there to share the kabin.

Got home this afternoon at about 3. The drive home was uneventful enough, but this morning's quick little blast of a ride was exactly what I needed. Hope y'all that headed to Little Switz had a good ride!

Not only the ride to and from LSNC was great, so was the Smoked Salmon salad.   :good2:

Always is! I'm about at the point where I don't even want to look at their menu. Just pick something at random, it'll be good.

The rain finally caught up with us here.

Fire is roaring, and most of us made it back to camp first.

Little Switzerland 226a is totally effed with tar snakes!   :sorry:  but the rest of the day was fun.

Did y'all hear what happened in Damascus yesterday?

Read that in the paper yesterday morning.  Was wondering if anyone was over there to 'see the parade'.  We found it by accident many rallies back.

Some of us made a pass through there about mid afternoon Friday.  I didn't know, before reading this article, that it was an appalachian trail / hiker parade.  Thought it was a hippy-festival   Seems there's a lot of overlap in the hippie/hiker look.

Anyway sorry to hear that happened.  50-60 injured.. wow.   Lucky no one was killed.

Andrew and I went through Damascus Tuesday and it was like a ghost town.  Very small-town and nice.  I'd like to bring him back sometime for the Trail Days.

(I just got home today; John & I went to Baltimore Saturday, visited our friend Sunday, drove back today so he could do his 3 job interviews.  800 miles on the bike, 1,500 miles in the car.  Dan, should I tell him "Chicken" for you next time I talk to him?)

Horrible about the accident.

There's a lot of overlap these days between the "hippie" look and the and "hiker" look because there's a lot of overlap between people who hike in the woods and people who identify as "hippies."   Kind of how "deadheads" look a lot like "hippies" because, well, they are the same people a lot of the time.   I'm not sure if people who go out walking in the woods for a whole day in the other kind of special clothes, the brown and green clothes that look like the clothes soldiers wear, are also "hikers," or if they call themselves something else.
