Reading through all this - three things come to mind.
1. Replace o-rings for the intake manifolds - in case a sight vacuum leak - though I'd assume it would also affect the idle?
2. Same with the vacuum caps - make sure they aren't dry cracked.
3. Then - although a change in jetting "shouldn't" be needed - I'd try shimming the needles a little bit.  Who knows, maybe gas formulation has changed enough to lean out an off- idle transition that was already a hair lean, while the rest of the jetting might have been a hair rich and are still happy?

This all assumes the carbs are properly synched first!

Yep, I see your picture. There is something special about those '84's.

Enjoy that bike!

Maintenance / EDIT - found it. Was : Routing...
Last post by tscheel - April 09, 2024, 07:26:59 AM
I have fixed the starter clutch on my 3CW, but now I forgot all about the original wire routing from the engine to the connectors on the right side. A picture or a diagram - anyone?

I'm talking about side stand, oil level, alternator and ignition wires.

Did the vacuum test - and yes, I could draw air through the ignition box. But blanking the line did not change anything.

Now I have the bike at home after a 1900 km's ride from Italy - it did between 12 and 15 km/liter. Not fantastic, but not crazy high. Rides fine above 2800rpm, not lacking power.

Now it is time for compression test, valve check, carb balancing and leak test of the carb boots.

I emailed XJRparts asking about their FJ1200 oil cooler that has been out of stock for a while, he said that he's considering having 10 kits made, and they would be about £300 delivered.
Not exactly cheap but will tidy up the old bike.

Tach mounted, this was my MK2 mount, still not happy with it, have 600mm of 25 x 12.5mm aluminium angle on its way which when powder coated will be a little neater.

Front forks have been rebuilt and collecting them tomorrow, so can start sorting centring the rear wheel and measure up for spacers and know how much needs milling off the brake caliper hanger.

Did you keep going with this project? If you did, how did it turn out?
One thing I recommend for every motorcycle and especially every FJ, make sure you set up the static sag. My 89 is set to 25mm sag in the forks and 30mm sag at the rear wheel.
FJs are good handling bikes (even totally stock) if the static sag is correct!

I ended up using the FZR1000 Genesis lower yoke with an LSL top yoke for handle bar conversion.

There was an option for a bar conversion for the Thundercat top yoke, but it wasn't as neat.
