Hello to all,

I am glad to have found this forum.
I purchased this bike to refurbish and ride to LA in September.
It is certainly not cherry, but does run and idle well on the stand, albeit on 3 cylinders. #2 plug is dry, so I will be looking at the carbs in the next few days. I am thinking I will get it into riding shape, then see how it goes down the road before figuring out what to do to clean it up..
Couple of questions, thanks for any replies:

Are there any replacement or aftermarket gas caps avaliable? If not, any suggestions for what to do?

Sources for other aftermarket parts?

Best to all,
Ben

TexasDave

Welcome to the forum and good looking bike in the correct colors too. I have an 84 also and am partial to the red and grey. I don't know if those caps are available any longer. One member "cclase" bought his 85 with the missing tab on the gas cap. He finally found one on ebay but he had to look for a long time. Ride safe.  Dave
A pistol is like a parachute, if you need one and don't have one you will never need one again.

Welcome Ben, yes as Dave said, eBay is where you should look. The '84 and '85 FJ's use the same cap.

Welcome Ben  :good2: The gas caps for the early FJ's seem to be hard to come by.  I will have to defer to someone else in the group that might have an answer.

Lots of parts sources.

Welcome Ben. Freshman year FJ Awesome! As far as caps for 84-85s, they are seriously hard to find and are not made anymore...or the locking tabs, is that the problem with yours or the lock? I grafted a later model cap onto my 84 after my tabs broke, if you're interested I can help you with this, but you'd have to obtain a later year cap. I posted a thread on this in modifications in June I think.  Anyway nice bike, enjoy it and enjoy this excellent and informative forum.                     Charley.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Here's a pic of my '84 tank with a later year cap on it using a 3-D printed ring.

Thanks folks for your kind replies and warm welcomes.

Charleygofast, I had found your thread, great job, and the best 3d printing purpose I have seen to date.
The latch pins on my cap mechanism, ie the two pieces of metal that fit under the filler tube, and hold the cap in place securely until released with the key, appear to have been remade incorrectly. The cap itself is somewhat fugly as well, but I will have new pins made, and deal with the esthetic aspect if there is no logical alternative.

I had seen this, but was skeptical, any thoughts or related anecdotes appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the forum,
The only cap I have seen available for your model is on Ebay in England. Unfortunately it includes a tank to go with it and no key (you might be able to swap your lock cylinder in) but seems reasonably priced.

The cap you linked to appears to be for the 1tx model (1986 FJ1200) but they could have the wrong picture.
Good luck with your search or modification, It's a good looking bike and would be good to keep it semi stock.

If you get those tabs made let us know. I'm sure there are alot of 84-85 caps out there with the tabs broken...I have one. I think they could be 3-D printed if someone had one that prints aluminum or carbon fibre. Ours only does plastic. That cap on EBay is a 86-later and wont just drop right in without alot of modifying and a trim ring. The original 84-85 cap was discontinued some time ago and listed for $165. and you couldn't just buy the tabs....that what I was told anyway. Some  are running later model tanks on their 84-85s Check out Paul1965  84 for a nice example of this swap.  Take care and good luck, you're in the right place for help gettin that sweet 84 in shape.                                                                                                                                                                                  Charley.

Great looking FJ. Welcome to the forum  :hi:

Like what most of the previous posts mention. The 1100 fuel caps are nearly impossible to fine. Unlike the 1200 fuel caps that were used on multiple models, the 1100 cap was only used on the FJ1100.

IMO your best option is to find a fuel tank with a cap on eBay or Amazon.

Ben is a good friend of mine and my family....a great fella. If anybody can help him out with that fuel cap issue I'd appreciate it. He is an avid biker, professional musician, dentist and fantastic human being....how eclectic is that? :good2:

I don't know how I missed this thread. When you make it to LA we can meet up.

Thanks to all, especially Mike. Because of our friendship, I am certainly a better wrench and human being. And his stories are better than mine! Sorry for my delay in responding to my own thread. My dad passed last month, and combined with trying to get this steed galloping again, I have been stuck in the great venus fly trap of life.

I am leaning to trying the lock mechanism off of one of these replacement xv535 caps coming in from China. Even if it doesn't work directly, it will be easier to blueprint the latch pieces, and have them made. I will certainly post any progress.

Fj monkey: It would be a great pleasure to meet in LA in September. I will pm you.

Best to all!

So sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. I'm watching my 90 yr old Pops slipping into the grip of dimentia, and my Mom passed away last Feb. also dimentia. I guess life wont let us be too dam happy without testing us with a dose of saddness. Any luck with that gascap?                                                                      Take care.                                                                                                                                                                                                           Charley.

Thanks Charley,
Sorry to hear about your folks as well. Trying to help them out is the least we can do, especially when they've been supportive and caring, isn't it? Best of luck as I think you're on a tough part of the deal now.
I ordered the Chinese gas cap. We will see what is usable if it arrives from China before I leave the country in 3 weeks. I hope it does as I won't have a chance to check it out until August.
Kind regards,
Ben
