I have a noise problem!

Hi all, I have a noise problem with my much loved FJ1100 84 model. At 60 kmph cruising along all is good, however when I accelerate over that in any gear a noise I can best describe as a howling noise cuts in, it's not a grind or a knock and it's quite loud. When I slow down to 40 kmph the noise stops. The bike runs fine even when the noise is present. I know noises can be hard to pinpoint but any ideas or opinions would be helpful. Also, I live in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, If anyone can point me towards a reputable place to have a engine rebuild done or any other options that would be helpful too.

Thanks Heaps!

Hey Frogger, bring it to Troyskies Manshed day, we`ll fix it!

If ya oil your speedo cable meanwhile and it happens to nail it, then we should celebrate at Troyskie`s place!
Besides, if I`m driving down all the way from Queensland I`m gunna kidnap ya on the way down anyhow.
(Tell wifey it`s a husband daycare centre especially for her relief!)

Please excuse my uncomputer skills. Randy suggested the speedo cable, I disconnected the old one and the noise (I thought) dissapeared, replaced it, but still there.

mmmmmm....I assume you replaced outer & inner cable....but " I disconnected the old one and the noise (I thought) dissapeared, replaced it, but still there.". If it`s not particularly kinked then might try some appropriate slippery stuff in the tacho mechanism or maybe speedo drive (though I doubt it).     :drinks:

Frogger,

If you disconnect the speedometer cable and the noise stops, the instrument itself may be "howling."  I fixed mine, or you could pay to get it "repaired" (it probably needs lubrication).  Here's how:

Seems like it is the dreaded "scalded cat death howl" of the speedo. This happened on my '86. Lubing the cable did nothing. Replacing the speedo fixed it. When it howls, check your speedo to see if the needle is bouncing. It may not bounce but mine did. Clearances loosen up over time inside the speedo mechanism, when they get loose enough the spinning causes a harmonic frequency resulting in a vibration (the howling). Depending on your budget, you could get a nice GPS speedo that will look proper and fit your cluster. it has already been done on an FJ or two.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Good onya Red, that`s the exact post I was looking for.

Fwiw I went back on my search efforts on this subject and found by googling "whine fj owners" I got a different result because I was silly enough to put a space between "fj" and owners.....NO! I didn`t end up with subjects by Klavdy, what I got was this..... http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=649.0 which isn`t bad, just wanted the one you found.

How did you go about your search? This should be on a separate topic me thinks, so I might transfer to a new topic by cut and paste following your answer. (or maybe we already have a search tricks topic on here already?)....Suspect I`m not the only one that needs to be further educated on the subject of searching. (esp given my brain isn`t as good as it use ta be....too many memorybytes I suspect)

Edit: Derhhh......I just searched "search tricks fjowners" and got this http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=9726.5;wap2

Yeah, I`m waffling....sorry Klav....Must remember to hide my helmet at the next Rally!  (popcorn)

Thanks FJ, will disconnect and test. Would you have a link for the GPS speedo that will fit?
Cheers, thanks again.
