Tacho stooped working and Fuel Pump relay questions

Hi all ,,Went for a ride today on my 87 model ,
The Rev Counter was working fine on the ride (I know this for sure because at one mad moment in 3rd it went up to 9000 rpm,,Then I slowed down to about 5 klm,s  over the speed limit and what did I pass around the next corner  ,,""Yes a Police Car with Radar"" , LUCKY 
The thing is when I arrived home I noticed that the Tacho was not working at all  ,Ever thing else on the Bike is working fine ,I checked the 4 fuses under the Seat and they are all good . Any ideas as to what to check next ???,,thanks

I fitted a Late Model Yamaha Fuel Pump to my 87 model ,only because the 87 model Bike came with 89 > model carbs.
After fitting the Carbs and Fuel Pump
I took the Diaphragm out of the 87 Petcock so the Fuel runs freely to the Petrol Pump and it all seems to be working fine ,,
What I need to Know is the way I wired the Pump OK ??,,
I wired the Fuel Pump to the Brown wire that goes to the rear Brake Light so the Fuel Pump is only Powered  when the Key is on ,,
The thing I need to know is  does the  Fuel Pump need to be powered through  a  ""Relay"" ???
or is it OK the way I have wired it up direct to switched Power and a Earth ,

The fuel pump bikes are set up so they will shut off If the engine stops running. So that they don't keep pumping in the case of an accident. There is an after market system for the safety shut off. That someone posted here before. Hopefully they can find it and Post the link.

The tachometer has 3 wires going to it. A common 12v (brown) a common ground (black) and a signal wire (grey). The brown and black wires are branched within the instrument wiring harness. The grey wire goes to one of the main ignition coil leads. I would check for broken wires first. The fuel gauge uses the same 12v wire and your turn signals use the same ground. If those are working, I doubt that it will be a power problem. My bet is a broken grey wire or a loose grey wire connection at the coil.

When retrofitting a fuel pump to the gravity fed '84-'87's, as Dan said, you need a safety switch.
Really, really a good idea, this safety switch. Like the oem Yamaha switch, it reads off the tach signal.

I see 2 main advantages to conversion over to a fuel pump:

1) Get away from the fussy vacuum petcock. (No big deal as long as RPM has a steady supply of new vacuum petcocks....but I see a time in the future when they will be no longer available.)

2) The ability to run a real fuel filter, keeping crap out of our carbs. This is a big deal IMHO
Our 30 year old steel tanks are not getting any younger.

Personally, I would not wire the pump to a lighting circuit. I'm not too worried on the added load on the lighting circuit, but the durability. There are many wires that can scuff and short out, blowing the lighting circuit fuse, thus disabling the fuel pump. I would run the pump off the switched power circuit that feeds the ignition box.

The only disadvantage of a fuel pump is Murphy's Law and adding another mechanical component into the mix. However, if your fuel pump craps out, it's very simple to bypass the pump and run gravity feed to get you home.
Something the '89-'95 FJ owners have been doing for years....easy to do...no big deal.

When retrofitting it's important to change your float bowl needles over to the smaller fuel pump needles, but you are (should be) good to go with a rack of '89 carbies.

Great thanks a lot for all the info ,, I will check out the Gray wire that goes between the Tacho and Coil ,,every thing else is working , so that must be the problem, I will also look at running the Fuel Pump power from another keyed source ,,Any ideas on best place to connect the Fuel Pump power .
