Rear wheel swap

Hello Gang.  I left all y'all last with me trying to chase down my charging, or lack there of, issues.  Good news I found the culprit, stator in the alternator was burnt slap up.  Better news is I found a complete unit to replace it with for cheap and installed it.

OK now that we are caught up.  I have been pouring over the post regarding the gixxer wheel swap and have a few questions.  Lets assume I can locate a entire wheel.  Sprocket, brake caliper, cush drive, brake arm , rotor the whole nine yards. 
1) is there a list of what years and bikes, 750 or 1100, are compatable?

2) will I have to change out the sprocket?

3) Can I use my existing brake reservoir?

I am sure all of this info is on the site somewhere and I just haven't found it yet so any guidance is welcome.

You should also look at the 97 to 2004  YZF600  Rear Rim .Its 5" wide ., Its easy to fit ,,Use your existing Sprocket and Calliper , I have 3 FJ Bikes and I have fitted YZF600  Rear Wheels to all of them , The Rim you are looking for should have R-86 stamped on it  also  should have  MT 5.00 ,You have to buy the complete Rear YZF600  Wheel  ""INCLUDING"" the sprocket carrier ,the Calliper Bracket ,and the 2 wheel spacers ,,, ,,These YZF600 Wheels are everywhere 4 sale in the US for $100 and less

I was also looking for a wheen swap, but was looking for the GSX-swap. This is the first time I read about the YZF-swap. must have missed that. So if I find the complete YZF600 wheel, it's plug and play (if I mount it including the YZF calibel bracket, sprocket carrier and the wheen spacers. So no welding required? I have a '89 3CV

Nope, the YZF600 rear rim is not plug and play.
You have to machine material off the Cush hub and spacer and off the caliper mount arm and weld an offset on the brake stay arm.

 I agree with taking a close look at the YZF 600 R wheel. The machining required is simple. Once machined its fool proof.

Yep, I ran the YZF600 rims on both of my FJ's ('84 and '92) for years. The 5" wide rim with a 170/60-17 tire was a very nimble combination.

Having had both the 180/55-17 and the 170/60-17 tires, both tires are as stable as a rock, but I must say that the 170 tire seems to me to turn in better than the wider 180 tire.....Although both tires 180 and 170, are light years better than the oem size 150/80-16 donut.

Modern motorcycle tires are amazing.

In the same boat myself. May be able to source a gsxr rear end. Haven't been able to find out if later FJ wheels fit. Will a '88 bolt straight up to a '86?

Yes it will (we are discussing the rear wheel, correct?)....other than a slight weight savings with the 3 spoke design, it's still a narrow 16" wheel.

The purpose of this exercise is to convert over to a modern, wider 17" rear tire that is readily available.

So does the combination above fit into the standard 84 Swing Arm?

Yes , I run a 170/60-17  on 2 of on my Bikes and a 160/60-17 on the other ,,All have the YZF600 Rear Rims
The YZF600 Rear Wheel is  an easy upgrade .You just have to get all the YZF Wheel parts and calliper holder bracket .
I have a way where I can machine all the parts with a  4" cut off  Angle Grinder and a good set of Vinier Callipers and then  (instead of taking the 3 mm of the sprocket holder) I just buy a Rear sprocket with a 2-3 mm step in it on one side.
You do not have to do anything at all  with the Calliper stay ,other than pull /bend it side ways about 6 mm by hand and it will fit straight back onto standard mounting point ,,no problem at all .
When we meet up Alan ,I will show you how I go about fitting the wheel up OR  just come for a ride to Sussex  any time and check it out  OR I could meet you for a coffee at Kiama  one of these days  ,,cheers Phil
