I came across these tank bra's on eBay Germany, all offered by the same seller and shipping is worldwide. I had one on my '89 that was stolen. A few members have seen it, as it was on the bike at the 2014 WCR and the 2017 Colorado Rally. I know that it has been mentioned before. If the bra is on the bike and you get caught in rain, it needs to be removed to dry out. Also, fueling needs to be done with care so no gasoline drips underneath. Prolonged wet or fuel underneath can affect the paint on the tank. There are a variety of tank bags available that snap into the permanent buckles on the tank bra.

Here is the link to the eBay store for the tank Bra's. http://stores.ebay.de/motea-shop-deutschland__W0QQ_sid38390192?_nkw=bagster+fj1200&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

If you decide to put a 1200 tank on. The '86/'87 tanks require zero mods to install.

Good info Fred.

Are later tanks different? I thought the tanks were the same from 86 to 96(4)?

The '86/'87 fuel tanks are different due to the vacuum actuated petcocks. These can easily be used on the 1100's with no modification.

The '88 and later fuel tanks have a free flow petcock and use the fuel pump to control the fuel flow. To use a '88 or later fuel tank on a non fuel pump FJ. There are 2 options. Install a Pingel type inline vacuum petcock or a small inline ball valve. The downside of the ball valve is, every time you turn off the bike, you have to manually close the ball valve.

Chris (ct7088) has a '86 tank on his '85. The color pattern is an exact match.

Okey dokey mate.

Is it possible to swap the petcock or is the hole pattern different?

I must say I would assume the Pingel type would allow a better vacuum line connection than the OEM.

Troy, it can be done I think. I saved a early tank from salvage... (still in my inventory) But it was an '89+ with an adapter plate. Home made and not good at that. But it was adapted for the early bolt pattern. I could make a proper plate if one was needed.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Mark,
Would be interested in the adapter.  I would like to use an 84 tank with 89 wiring harness and fuel pump on my current build.

Best Regards and HNY!

Let me see if I have my old '86 petcock to get the bolt pattern. Still have most of my garage items in boxes from the move. Worse case is I can use the tank off my '86 when I get it home next week.

The 84/85 petcock has the same bolt pattern as the 86/87, either petcock can be used. The early model has a mechanical valve for the reserve function and is a larger assembly. Using the 86/87 petcock with no connection to the electric reserve valve there is no reserve, the tank will drain completely.
