Hi guys,

My name is Mike, I am from Ireland and I own an 1990 FJ1200.

I have had this bike approximately 8 years now and when I bought it I used it all the time.

This is where the terrible admission comes in.

About 5 years ago I had one of those "great ideas". I intended to strip the bike and rebuild it over winter. Can you see where this is going  :sorry:

Everything went well up to a point where I needed to put the engine in. The engine required some work so was not going in straight away.
It needed a new head gasket and a new cam chain. I intended to do some other maintenance on the engine while I was in there as well.

Well at the same time I decided to start my own business in IT.

Anyone who has ever done that knows how time consuming that is.

Long story short the poor fudge has sat in my shed until last week. I moved out some of my other bikes to make room and have the FJ on the ramp with the engine on another stand.

I have already got some parts on the way and I'm hoping to get some advice especially on the engine side of things from the guru's here.

Welcome Mike!  :hi:

We have several very knowledgeable engine folks here on our forum, so you've come to the right spot for your questions.
Head gasket should be straight forward, but putting in a new cam chain will mean opening up the bottom end and removing the crank to fit the new chain.
You may want to consider upgrading your shift forks while you have the bottom end open.
Everything you need for your project is available from RPM (see the top banner)

Cheers  Pat

Hey Folks, I split out the discussion on cam chains and moved those over to the Maintenance Section:

A big TEXAS Howdy and welcome to you lad. My red haired and hot tempered wife, darling as she is, is from Ireland. We took a cruise to Ireland last year and she showed me around, beautiful country with some great country roads to ride  on. Welcome to the forum and don't hesitate to ask any question at all, I guarantee somebody on here knows the right answer. Good luck on your rebuild. I'm restoring a 93 FJ1200 myself, but running into trouble with the locking gas cap. Always something on these older bikes.
