Hi folks.

I just ordered aftermarket handlebar controls for left and right side for my 89.  They do not look identical but are in functionality.  Question is ... has anyone ever tried aftermarket control groups for this thing?  I am not a purist in the sense that I do not change colors and controls, etc.  I am just freshening up this old bike.  Tried the heat on the plastics, it did some good but still tired looking, so ...

Post up some links so we can see what they look like.

Thanks Tim...let us know how they turn out.

My '84 has the choke collar on the left control, so if I were to go this route I would need to convert my choke over to the later FJ style.

I noticed that your new switch has the flash to pass...neat feature.

Cheers

Welcome.  Yes, flash to pass is nice, I hope I can get it working okay.

Please keep us posted on how this works out. Good looking find!

Some of the European (and perhaps, Canadian) FJ's incorporate the Flash-to-pass trigger and the ability to turn the headlight off. I've been told that the switch sets will plug right into the U.S. spec bikes, and work as designed.

I'll be getting one of these, too, if it works out for you.

Sounds like it would be appreciated by many to also come up with a wiring conversion key/diagram for FJs too.

If you want to use the connector on the aftermarket harness, here is a place I've used in the past for connectors: http://vintageconnections.com

I just received the switch sets in the mail yesterday.  They look great, positive feeling function and substantially suitable construction.  I will hook them in this weekend and let you guys know how they work out.  Fingers crossed.  Thanks for the connectors link!  You just gotta LOVE this forum!  So glad I got an FJ!

Well, I took a good look at the controls, they are workable BUT, only one hole in for throttle, need two for push / pull cables.  The collar looks the same and I think I can simply drill a hole for one of the throttle cables.  Fingers crossed.  I willl post if I can get some success this weekend.

No go ... cannex the aftermarkets ... left side is great, right side is too small to house throttle disc.
