Regulator Installation

So I am going to replace my regulator with an external regulator per mods instruction I found in files section.  As I am going over wiring of the bike, I have 4 pole relays on the right and left sides of the bike.  My question ... what goes in and out of these?  The wires rattled loose and one burnt up so I cannot for sure say how these relays hook in.  Are the relays custom?

The brown wire and red wire running to the alternator - I know I need to place my new regulator inline on the brown wire per files instructions.  Do I run both the red and the brown wires to the battery?  Confused .. a simple explanation would be appreciated or direction.  I know I am likely making this more difficult than it likely is.  Thanks for ANY help.   :dash2:

Four pole relay, or four pin relay? A 4-pole relay has 4 separate switches actuated by a single signal. So a 4-pole relay will have 10 pins. A relay with 4 pins is a single pole... 1 switch... so 2 pins for the switched circuit and 2 wires for the signal circuit.

With all the questions and problems you are having, I think you really need to buy a Factory Service Manual. Without one, you are just guessing in the dark. Yamaha still sells them online. About $90, I think. Well worth the money.

Okay ... After having her torn apart for paint, clean and wiring revamp I started her up after a long winter nap.  The external reg mod ... 13.8 volts! Yahoooooooo.  That was at 4k rpm on the stand.  I am going to leave it there I think.  The mod was absolutely easy.  Now to finish putting her together.  Did the spin on mod as well.  ShellT6.  New plugs.  New Wix.   New grips.  New adjustable levers.  New DVM.  New rocker switch for spotlights.  Satin black now with new decals.  New screen deflector.  This is addicting.

That's a ride inbetween each Mod to see what difference it made, I think that's about 10 rides you should've had  :rofl2:

I am so glad you reminded me of the mod to ride ratio!  I can tell my wifey tonight that I am ten rides short of a quota.  Wait ... she already knows that!

The external reg is a wondrous thing.  Spot on charging now and adjustment is so easy and simple.  If longevity greets my squeaking wallet, then I am all set.  Makes sense to have it in air stream cooling rather than placed in one of the hottest places possible. 

The spin on oil filter mod from RPM is brilliant as well imho.  Going to watch oil temp with filler cap gauge and see if it makes a difference from short Wix to much taller filter tbd.  Seems as if it should.

One last thing ... I cannot believe you can STILL buy these bikes at the price they go for.  SHHHHHHHHHHH .............

The voltage output on my Transpo VR is adjustable, so I set mine to 14.2 volts charging @ 4K rpm.
No more boiling batteries for me!
I have found (the hard way) that new AGM's do not like the 15+ volts my oem VR would pass thru. The old school lead acid batteries were much more tolerant of high charging rates, unhappy but tolerant. Just don't forget to add water and make sure that battery vent hose is connected and run down below the bike.

No more of those worries for me!

Funny you said so.  I pulled an AGM out and now opting for standard battery.  I am thinking that I will crank the pot up to 14.2 as well.  I do not run ANY heavy load though.  Just some LED spots and a phone cradle with USB port.  I think I can stand to buy a new standard battery yearly for piece of mind.  Maybe make it yearly maintenance.

My AGM's are now happy @ 14.2 volts. I can get ~3 years life out of them.
I leave them on a Battery Tender.
All of the AGM manufacturer's specifications I've seen, list maximum charging voltage @ 14.6 volts.

A costly lesson for me.
