I bought my FJ new in 1992, I think it was $5800.  I have all the papers, brochures, etc.  It only has 4700 Miles.  When the kids came along it didnt get much use and sat....in my garage for years and yes the carb and tank is all gunked up.  Now it is time to get it back on the road and I look forward to riding it again after 10 years.

I have browsed a bit and this site is a great help.  The Illustrated card post is great.  I look forward to contributing to the form as appropriate..

Welcome Eric!  Good to have an original owner with us, glad that you held on to your '92.

Folks have had great results sending their carbs into RPM for ultrasound deep cleaning and expert jetting, adjustment and repairs. Easy to do: pull the carbs, drain them (bowls off)  let them sit for a day to dry out, box them up, send them off.
You will get back a set of carbs ready to go....plug and play. Give Robert a call at RPM.
Your tank is best to do your self.
Don't ride anywhere on those 10 year old tires, they are as hard as a rock and slippery as snot. Flush all your hydraulics.

The non ABS '92's are my favorite year.

Cheers.  Pat

Erik,

Welcome to our sandbox!     You will find a lot of experience here that can help with old-bike issues.  RPM (and others) can get the carbs right, if needed.  You can clean the tank with a length of light chain, shaken inside the tank.  Neutralize the rust in there with electrolytics -a battery charger, baking soda, and an electrode.

https://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/rust/electrolytic_derusting.htm

Seal (repair) the tank inside with POR-15 sealants.

RPM has a lot of hard-to-find parts and pieces for the FJ.  Let people here know what you need to find there, and maybe we can help.
Send some pix, when you can.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Welcome to the forum  :hi:

Great advice has already been given. I will add.... Be mindful of the rubber intake boots between the carbs and the head, they may have developed pin holes. I would also suggest replacing the rubber brakes lines with braided line. RPM is a great source for them.

Welcome to the forum!  I would add a comment that you may want to rebuild your brake calipers and at least disassemble the clutch and brake master cylinders and clutch slave cylinder and clean all the gunk that will have built up from the old brake fluid sitting that long.  Post some pics of your bike when you have time.

Thanks for the responses!

I knew to take care of the carbs but all the rubber on the bike is original.. tires, brake lines, etc. and hadn't really thought about the brake lines, calipers, and flush so I will have to get after that.  Also the electrolysis for my tank was an interesting read.

Hopefully I can have it on the road my late spring..
RPM has a great site and I have contacted them about the carbs..I should probably start a restoration thread so you can see how bad it is and the progress...

Welcome to our digital campfire.

Not too many members in Illinois. There used to be a few in the Chicago area, but I haven't heard from any of them in several years. I'm about 140 miles southwest of you near Princeton, IL.

Welcome Eric, feel free to document your restoration. We love FJ pictures and seeing how others solve their issues. Then you can post some rides and places you like to ride.

Welcome!  If you are fairly competent with a set of tools, you can usually do a better job than most local cycle shops - some won't even work on some of these "old" bikes!

Good luck!  And ask questions if you get stuck   :good:

Thanks, I was in Peru today.  My Electrical Distributor is Complete Industrial.  We just did a revamp of the City of Princeton's Generator control across from the Covenant Church on Princeton.  I know the area pretty well..at least the manufacturers..
