Thanks Randy, 6-7k is very good for a sport tire with excellent grip.

Who dare say tire threads are boring? There's always something to be learnt.

Avon Storm 3D X-M

Does anyone have first hand experience with these tires?  Comments, opinions, dirty jokes?

I have the 3D XM rear and Azaro front, both 16", on my '84.  Really excellent tires with no downside I've found.  I think the 16" front Azaro is out of production, but the 3D XM was apparently going to have a 16" option fairly soon.  I bought a few Azaros in case it takes some time for the 3D XMs to appear.

I'd think the F & R 3D XMs would be your best option.  I have 17 F & R on my '92 and have run Dunlop and Michelin's best tires...  the Avons compare very well and are confidence inspiring.

Much thanks to everyone that has contributed here.  Randy, I didn't know the Metz and Pir were belted but that the Avon was radial.  Overwhelmingly, it looks like the Avon wins this shootout.  I don't know about Andy but I'll be ordering the Storm 3D X-M front and rear.  Lucky me that I found a '90 and it already came with a 17" front.

So tonight I was at the garage where the FZR is stored and the FJ spends it's wintertime.  So I looked at the tire sizes on the Fizzer.  Sure enough, the front is 120/70-17, just like my '90 FJ.  Good to know for someone contemplating a swap.  The rear is 180/55-17 which would be an awesome tire to have on a FJ if it fit.  The aluminum swingarms look the same, I wonder if they are the same or if the FZR arm would swap over?  I'm not going there but there are plenty on this board that like to mod their bikes.

The first photo is with a stock FJ1200 swing arm with a 1992 Suzuki GSX-R750 17" x 5.5" wheel and a 180/55/17 tire.

The second photo is with a 2003 FZ1 swing arm with a 1998 GSX-R1100 17" x 5.5" wheel and a 180/55/17 tire. This extends the wheel base by about 1 1/2 inches.

I took a partial recon ride today out to the little dragon. It was closed earlier this year due to mud slides, but it is again open and there is once again a bunch of new pavement. :good2: :good2: :good2: :good2:

We are definitely making that part of our ride next weekend. :dance2: :yahoo: :dance2: :yahoo:

Here is the final look of my Michelin RS tires as I got puncture today in the rear tire. Plugged it and made it back home, but since they are down to the wear bars and it is getting to fall/winter weather going to put on a set of Pilot Road 5's next.

That looks bigger than a 180.  It also looks like you ride right on the edge.
