Wing = Aerodynamic drag = horsepower loss...

Randy - RPM

See "Gurney Flap"

AKA, wickerbill...

The Gurney flap can add additional drag to the wing. I found this in the first article I read about it...
"Designers beware. A Gurney Flap can add few percent increase in drag, depending on how tall it stands"

Mechanical traction has no cost of aero drag.

That is the starting point, if we still can't get it hooked then we will start with a pro stock style spoiler.

It's basically a flat extension of the upper deck lid surface that will draw the air from under and create a low pressure area to help push down on the back of the car at speed.

That will also allow us to build the structure to add a parachute. Ryan said the end of the runway comes up real quick with brakes only. He's not sure if he can get it stopped of he does get to 200 or more.

Also going with a drag tire this time instead of a Hoosier oval track tire.

Not exactly...

From the Wiki:

The Gurney flap increases the maximum lift coefficient (CL,max), decreases the angle of attack for zero lift (α0), and increases the nosedown pitching moment (CM), which is consistent with an increase in camber of the airfoil.[4] It also typically increases the drag coefficient (Cd),[19] especially at low angles of attack,[20] although for thick airfoils, a reduction in drag has been reported.[21] A net benefit in overall lift-to-drag ratio is possible if the flap is sized appropriately, based on the boundary layer thickness.[22]

Your reference article is contradicting in reference (see red)

Can we agree that regardless of the Gurney flap, the two surfaces of a wing in the air flow increases Aero drag and robs horsepower?

If we run the aforementioned flat surface spoiler, we have only increased a single surface area while creating a low pressure area below. This car is already Aero challenged and the goal is to not increase the drag anymore thus using the horsepower to reach the goal.

That's interesting Randy, thanks Rick, good stuff.  :good:
I know Rick see's a lot of aero tricks from his fellow racers at the track. Even Porsche has been know to use a wing or two...

Randy, I will be pleasantly surprised if Ryan gets there (200) on tires alone.

Perhaps tires and rear ballast? Something's gotta hold down the back end of that light little Miata.

Getting that last 25mph is gonna be a challenge for sure.

Go Ryan Go!

Randy, the operative word higlighted in red above is "typically". The part I highlighted was also found to be true IF you could find the proper balance. The brute force of that silly Miata would indicate that refined nuances like those found in the Porsche world would be lost on you cretins.  :bomb:

I would also have to emphasize that any wing you put on the rear will be far less effective without a front air dam, etc. They work together to keep air out from under the car that creates lift, while providing downforce.

When I was 15, Mom caught me doing the "Gurney Flap" in the bathroom.

She has never let me forget it.
