Anyone fitted EFI to an FJ?

Wondering if anyone has fitted EFI to their FJ?

I'm thinking all the gubbings from a late XJR might fit without being too much of a ball ache. Then fit a power Commander.

Hey Steve, wait...don't spend any money on this until you look closer and take measurements.
To answer your question, yes, we have thought about it but we found that the XJR FI does not fit between the FJ's frame rails.
The XJR uses a back bone style frame and the FJ uses a perimeter style frame.
The XJR throttle position sensor hangs off the left side of the XJR throttle bodies and interferes with the Left top frame rail on the FJ.

There is a lot of talk on the XJR forums favoring the carbed XJR over the EFI version. The owners of the newer EFI versions that previously owned the carbed versions claim less power and a lot less gas mileage. Of course Yamaha did not make them EFI for more performance but to satisfy government emission standards.

Power Commander V available now to overcome the dodgy factory map.

Now looking at FJR bodies

You will find the FJR has a different cylinder spacing than the FJ's 77-85-77

The RPM system uses FJR throttle bodies with special off set adaptors.

My understanding of the Power Commander is that they are tuning modules that are use in conjunction with the bikes oem ECU. The Power Commanders are not a substitute for a ECU, they just modify the oem ECU's signals.
Please let me know if this is not correct^^^ it's been awhile since I checked.

The RPM EFI system uses a fully programmable Micro Squirt ECU which is superior, instead of using the oem XJR ECU with the Power Commander band aid.

Can't see the RPM set up, do you have a link?

No link, no official info.
Several years ago Randy brought the EFI bike to a West Coast Rally where a few pictures were taken.
Not sure the pictures survived....we lost many of our Rally pictures when the FJRally.com site went down.

Randy has had the EFI project on hold for a few years, awaiting a dyno installed in his shop.
With the power and speeds involved with a FJ running EFI system, tuning the system on the street was not the most prudent thing to do.

Thanks for the replies.  I did find the thread on the FJ EFI.  FJR throttle bodies are pretty cheap this side of the pond, but looks like I'll need some of Randy's mounts.

Pat, you are correct, the PC just provides modification to the OEM mapping.  You still need an ECU, plus all the sensors that go with it.

Steve Conklin tried the FI conversion.  I don't think he we ever successful, although I'm not sure he has completely thrown in the towel.
