At the moment, I am planning to ride. Taking I-40 to Barstow. Depending on the weather, either 395 to 120 and into Oakdale or 58 to Bakersfield and up 99...
Fred

Fred, that's a long and boring ride from Kansas.  You are welcome to trailer the bike to my house, leave truck/trailer here and ride to Oakdale. I have a very secure back yard for your truck so no worries there. Find Rosamond on Google Maps; I'm only 15 miles from the 58 Freeway.

Ryan, that goes for you, too.

Fred, if you take Bill's offer then you can meet up with Ryan and I. Less boring with 3 FJs up to Oakdale.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Fred

Fred, are you planning on riding out...or trailering?

At the moment, I am planning to ride. Taking I-40 to Barstow. Depending on the weather, either 395 to 120 and into Oakdale or 58 to Bakersfield and up 99.

Google maps shows 1606 miles. I might try for a Bun Burner Gold 1500.

Fred

Bill and Mark, I sent you both a PM.

Thank you both for the offers. I agree, the ride from Kansas out to California will be a long and mostly boring ride. It will be long and boring whether I ride or drive. Doing this solo, the trip will be more enjoyable on the bike. Gas mileage is a huge difference. 45mpg versus 15mpg. Adjusting the handle bars into their touring position allows me to ride 150-180 miles between stops. I also plan on riding a new stretch of road. US54 from Dalhart, TX to Tucumcari NM. I really would like to get a 3rd official Iron Butt Certificate. I would like to get a Bun Burner 1500 and try to get from Wichita to Oakdale in under 40 hours.

Before we know it, the RPM fall rally will be here.

I have had a couple of accommodation inquiries. The three locations that are within walking distance are:

Holiday Motel
Motel 6
Holiday Inn Express

The Best Western is probably close to a mile or more away from the other locations.

Jerry's is the closest, but it is a tiny place and appears to be a couple of converted homes. I am not aware of anyone staying there in their trips to town.

The best breakfast is located centrally within the three within walking distant. There is another coffee shop a couple block to the west, but not really out of the way to get to by walking wither.

There are times guys share accommodations to keep the cost down, it is probably time to start that process so everyone can have a plan.

More details beginning next month, but I don't see many changes over the past events.

Friday: ride in and head out somewhere for dinner
Saturday: Ride with a lunch stop. Back to the shop for dinner, gathering the digital group around a real camp fire for adult beverages.
Sunday: ride out day and manshed day for those who wish to participate.

Anyone up for sharing a room?  My plans are to arrive Thursday afternoon/evening and depart Monday morning. If your plans are to arrive Friday and leave Sunday morning, that is not a problem.

For anyone that may want to come a day early. Friday, I plan on playing tourist and do a road trip to Monterey (130 miles each way). Lunch plans on Fisherman's Warf or Cannery Row.

I have a question for those who are riding in from significant distances.

I know the first year the ride was pretty ambitious as far as miles & time and a several elected to cut it short. It was pretty hot that year as well.

I would like to know what you guys think. Do we need a bigger ride than last year or shorter or...

I know guys are riding many miles to attend on Friday, ride the group ride on Saturday and then turn around and head home for significant miles on Sunday.

You guys let me know.

I thought last year's ride was about perfect.I wouldn't want it shorter another thirty or fourty miles would be ok,but it was nice to have plenty of time for socializing at dinner.

Since I began attending Rally's, i have found that the 200-275 mile round trip distances work very well.

For many that don't ride 300-400 mile days on a regular basis, the longer rides have a tendency to create early fatigue. Riding at higher speeds than normal on twisty roads and needing to be mentally attentive at all times can bring on fatigue sooner than normal.

No particular preference on ride distances.

I'll be there - arriving Friday & leaving Sunday.

I'll have a room reserved.
