Starter Motor Noise

For awhile now, my starter gives out a howl at the end of starting up, whether cold or hot, can't hear it while it's turning motor over but usually at the end and also when the starter button gets stuck.

Sort of sounds like a dry bearing.

Any clues on the culprit.

From what you describe, I agree, it sounds like a dry bearing or bush.

Next thing then, are any bearings or bushes inside serviceable , easily serviceable would be better.

Sparky,

It sounds like a dry bearing.  If you can find a breaker yard or used parts dealer, the newer versions of the starter have four brushes, not two, for better cranking.  RPM has them new, but they would cost a lot there.  Australia eBay has a few offered.  Search for P/N 4KG-81890-00-00 and for FJ1100 starter motor.  I saw starter repair kits (with bearings) from Arrowhead there, also.

Once you have any good starter in the bike, you can see about repairing the starter that you have now.  Once repaired, you can install it in your bike, or sell it on eBay to reduce your costs.  The bearings and end caps are not available from Yamaha now.  The same starter fits '84-'93 FJ, XJ1200, and XJR1300.  Best wishes.

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

They are very easy to take apart.  Kind of a pain to get out, you have to remove the slave cylinder and maybe the CS cover?

Just grease the bushings.

Wow, $495.00 for a new starter from Yamaha...

That's crazy, I sell the genuine Yamaha starters much cheaper: Genuine Yamaha 4 Brush Starter

I used to stock the rebuild kits, but no one bought them. i can probably still get one if you go that way. With that said, the rebuild kit that I offer did not have the rear housing bushing and that is where they have the most wear.

I do not recommend aftermarket offshore starters as the poor internal quality can leave you stranded: Starter motor for '89 FJ1200

Getting noisier,
Found one from a 07 XJR1300 but will it fit and is it a 4 or 2 pole?

It is a four pole. They stopped the two poles in the 90's.

That is incorrect, that is the correct starter. It might be silver instead of black, but it will fit the engine without issue.

Finally got the starter motor, it's black not silver.
So how can I tell what model it is ? There are no markings on it apart from some on the black cover which don't correspond to anything.

Noice!

Being black should match the original.

Was it plug and play as it seems from your post?
