....haha, and normally would have resulted in 20 responses. It is to stop you putting it in gear with the engine running, to avoid what you say you've already done a number of times. If you've ridden off with the stand down, it's either not working or it's been bypassed.

If the sidestandswitch works the engine will not run when sidestand is down so it has been fiddled with.

If you have ridden off with it down i suggest you start a new take off safety prosedure where you ALWAYS  take a look down and check that the sidestand is up before you take off. Not cool when you are going into a left turn at some speed.

This is incorrect. The engine will run, until the bike is placed into gear with the sidestand down. It will also run while in gear with the sidestand down, if the clutch is held in. Unless, one or or both has been bypassed or is no longer functioning.

I believe this is also incorrect.

As far as I know, my FJ works "As it should, from the factory"
If I have the side-stand down, even if I am holding the clutch in, as soon as I click it into gear it kills the engine.............

The only time it should run with the side-stand down, is if the transmission is in neutral.

Just to add to the 1 response.
Part of the training course way back in the 80s focused on a final glance down to check the side stand, before looking over shoulder, then the off. This preflight dance is now ingrained and I think it’s good practice.
I’m even in the habit of giving it a touch with the left boot.

Yes, Alan you are correct. I was backwards, was thinking of cranking it in gear with the clutch in and sidestand up. Haven't had my coffee yet.  morning1

so what is the formal name called?

it would be better just to have an idiot light on the dash

where is it connected? i have an aftermarket ignition system, would that be the cause of it not working, since I heard so many different scenarios, do they tend to not work?

do new bikes have this safety switch?

Is there an orange wire on your Dyna ignition wire harness?  If so, that wire needs to be connected into the sidestand circuit.  Your switch mist have a jumper wire installed

yes sir there is an orange, i have to check, but like i mentioned that dyna is on it's way out, so the stock wiring is connected to the igniter? and a kill switch?

so in gear with the clutch  released, the engine is "killed"?

or rather if in gear, it will never run or start

and with the clutch out in netrual the engine is allowed to run?

and with the sidestand up the switch is grounded? or open?

i guess it's not that simple after all

Side stand down in any gear except neutral, engine off.
Circuit is normally closed.
Side stand up, circuit closed, engine runs.
Side stand down, circuit open, engine off.

Another thing i usually check before takeoff is that my shoelaces is tucked under so they don't tangle up in gearlever or brakelever kinda embarrassing when stopping at a red light and  you just fall over.

Here is a vid of a sidestand down crash
