Can anyone tell me what the factory setting is for turns out  for the mixture screws.  And, how to get rid of this icon?

Thanks   Dave

The only "icon" I see is a large primate in the second post  :sarcastic:

The second quoted response - a little long but we worth your time. Especially the part about using your finger nail to determine a "level setting" for the mixture screws.

Thank you guys. 2 1/2 turns is a good starting point . The holding my hand over my face icon comes up when I am composing so I thought it came up with each post. It's the way I feel when I ask all my dumb questions.

Ok, I have the carbs working fairly well but now, the throttle cable is sticking. When I look at it when operating, it seems that the rear cable does not wrap around the wheel when I open the throttle.. Is this just that the cable is twisted a bit in the mounting hole on the wheel or too much slack ?  Or.... ??

Pat Conlon

Hi Dave, with the cable splitter box that we enjoy on the 84-87 FJ's, I've never had a problem with a twisted cable.
The reason is that in the splitter box, the cables have round head ferrules that can (if needed) rotate in the slides, easing any twisting torsion that may be on the push or pull cables.
Check and see if you have these type of cable ferrules in your splitter box. You should.

You can always disconnect the cables from the slides in the box and then with the tension off the cables reposition the cables on the throttle shaft wheels. Just to verify all the cables are relaxed with no twist on them,  then put the slides back on and button everything back up.

Check your cable alignment at your carbs. Make sure everything lines up.

Cheers

The splitter box is also on my 89 3CV Pat - I thought they were like that until the 3XW's.

But as you say, I always disconnect the cables at the splitter box when I'm taking off and replacing my carbs so that I can fit the cables round the wheels with ease, and without the issues of tension in the cables.  :good2:

Thanks Dean, good to know. Splitters on Gen 1, 2 and 3...gotcha
I thought the splitter boxes went away when the fuel pumpers came out....

I like having them.....My Gen 4 '92 didn't have one and it made the R/R of the carbs more of a hassle.

Between the UniPods and splitter box, I can have my carbs off my bike and on the bench in 5 minutes.

Very handy.

When one of you invent a time machine, please send me that info last March as that looks a lot easier than not taking it apart!

Is there a merit badge for removing and installing the carbs twice without undoing the splitter?

Bryan, yes you get a special badge...extra credit if you also struggled with the oem airbox.

Holy crap, I can't imagine what you went through. How did you do it?
Disconnect the cables at the throttle tube then pull the carbs out with the cables attached at the carbs?
(That's how to do it on the Gen 4's)

No, no, don't tell me you fussed with unhooking the cables at the carbs....while the carbs were on the bike?
That's really hard....

With the splitter box and the oem airbox I can get the carbies off and on the bench in around 5 million years. Then it's just a short geological age to get them back on......

I have the OEM airbox but I had Ryan's special tool.  I disconnected the carbs, then disconnected the cables whilst holding the carbs above the motor.  Installation was in reverse.  I actually got pretty good at it, but I'm glad to let that skill rust away.
