Fuel tank vent leak when filling
« on: April 04, 2021, 01:13:24 PM »

Hey all,
Since I brought my '89 FJ1200 back to life, it leaks out the tank vent/overflow when I fill it. It didn't used to do this. Is there a valve or something that needs to be rebuilt?

Is the leak primarily when you refuel it with a hot engine and then park it?  Or don’t ride very far and park it?

My solution was to leave a little more room for expansion - like when refueling a plane that has been at altitude for a while and the leaving it on the ramp in the sun - - sure fire way to start venting fuel.

Also, check to see if the seal is still pliable, or if it is hard and cracked.   I don’t know if the seals are still available or not?  But I know where I’d check first!

Exactly this, except this is before I can jump on the bike and drive away from the pump.  I'd like to fuel it as high as possible for the range, but it vents right away.  I don't think it used to.

I'm not sure what the seal plate is.  I'm hoping somebody had one of these apart and took some pictures so I can understand what is happening.

Many thanks.
