AC generator (Non FJ)
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:26:28 AM »

dont know if you guys can help. got a bit of an issue here. got 3 wires coming out of crankcase.green with white tracer, white with bllue tracer, and a beige? or white with no tracer. i get how an ac gen works but how do i test it? without removing it. the three wires connect up  to 3 yellow wires. these wires run back into the loom and come out near the regulator rectifier, in a terminal block that has three other wires running out of it .6 terminals if you follow me the three that arnet yellow are red brown and black. given red is the positive. help. dash2 shok its of an 84 gsx 750 es. got the manual but elektirickery is ablack art to me. the manual just shows the three yellow wires running into a connection then into the ac gen. no colour codes as to what theyellows connect to. cheers if you can help i got a multi meter and a basic grasp but just dont want to short anything or run it all wrong.

As I understand it (meaning I may be very wrong), the yellows are AC out from the alternator.  They go to the rectifier which changes the 3phase AC into DC.  The Red wire is +V unswitched, the Brown wire is +V that is switched by the ignition key, and the Black wire is Earth/Ground.
You should be able to test the rectifier by taking any 2 contacts (of the 6) and testing for continuity.  It will read infinite resistance in one direction and short in the other (when you switch your test leads).  You can test the alternator by measuring the AC voltage between any pair of the yellow wires.
Hope this helps some.

Here's a link that will answer all your questions.  I'm working on a VFR 800 and on that bike Yellow is from the stator to the R/R (A/C).  Red-White is +12dc return to the bike and green is ground.

I'd suggest upgrading the R/R on the bike you have to the newer style Mosfet R/R.  I used one off a later model ZX-10.
