Hey guys,

I have an 85 FJ and can't seem to keep the danged back part of the front fender on.

I've replaced it twice, now and can't seem to figure out what the problem is.

Somehow, sometime when I'm riding (and not necessarily on a bumpy road) I feel a twitch and the entire back section whips off.

Suggestions?

Man, thats weird. Does it have all its mounting points? There should be one on the side of each fork leg and one on each side at the top under the fork brace.

I constantly battle the side mounts breaking on my fender but other than a vibrating noise it hasn't caused any problems.

I used to use a small rubber o-ring under the bolt heads that held my stock fener in place and I have heard other owners say that its a good idea not to get the fender bolts too tight when installing. IIRC Henry was having some fender issue's a few years ago perhaps he can chime in with his experiance's.

Hello Geoffh,
1) You need to start with a fender which has all the correct mounting points intact and crack free. A new fender may be needed. You may need to buy a late model FJ fender (all fit) and paint it to match your '85 colors.
2) As Eric indicated, a rubber washer is helpful between the plastic and metal mounting points.
3) DO NOT overtighten mounting bolts. Use blue Locktite to keep them from backing out.
4) I have found that a Superbrace helped keeping my fenders crack free on my 2 FJ's. The FJ's 41mm stanchion tubes on a 500lb+ motorcycle are spindley by today's standards. The Superbrace helps keep the lower sliders from bowing out (slightly) under compression.

Hope this helps.
