How to check for part compatibility between FJ's and different Yamaha models
« on: February 05, 2012, 01:28:55 AM »

Lately it seems that we have been getting questions on which parts are interchangeable between different year FJ's and other models made by Yamaha (USA imports only) that have similar compatible parts which will fit our FJ's, so here's one easy way to check.

For Example: Say you have a 1985 FJ1100 and you need new rear brake rotor.
Rather than paying full retail $300 each (if you can find it) from the dealer (or $170 each from Powersports) for the new rotor, you see on FleaBay for a good price, a low mileage rear rotor off a 2006 V-Max and you think....Hmmmm, I wonder if this will fit my '85 FJ1100?

1) Go to the Partszilla.com and click on the year of your bike (1985):
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/parts.html

2) You will get a listing of all the USA available Yamaha models, click on your model FJ1100N
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1985

3) You will get a list of pages that covers different areas of your '85 FJ1100 You might have to search a bit to find where your part is so scroll down and click on "Rear brake-Caliper":
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1985/fj1100n

4) You will now be on the page showing a diagram of your rear rotor and caliper.
 https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1985/fj1100n/rear-brake-caliper

5) See the rotor #1 on the diagram?
Now Scroll down to the table of parts (below the diagram) See the part #'s in RED?
Click on the red part# and you will get a description of the part, as well as a nifty table titled "Related Fitment"
https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/36Y-25831-00-00
Scroll down the table to see all the applications.

Sooo...Your answer is Yes, the 2006 V-Max rear rotor will fit your '85 FJ1100. (see the listing?)
Study up. Pop Quiz on Friday.  Cheers!

Thanks, Pat.

As an FYI:  The same applies to boats.net

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/parts.html

(No affiliation, blah blah blah.  I found the site when searching for a few particular parts.)

Using the same steps that Pat layed out is how I found that 87'/88 FZR750R front wheels are the same part numbers as the 87'/88' FZR1000 front wheels that are used for the 17" x 3.5" wheel mod.

Brilliant post, unfortunately  it doesn't show compatibility of different parts, ie top yoke from xjr1200 to 86 fj1200  dash2 top yokes are gonna be the death of me, i dislike the abm or whatever its called plate that they make and i especially dislike the price!

Yea, sorry about that....the parts listings are only for USA imported Yamaha's, which unfortunately leaves out many bikes, the XJR's in particular.

If you are wanting to know part compatibility between all years of FJ, I will often refer to this site:  http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-fj1200_model16734/  It is easy to use as each screen is broken down to sub systems.
