Windshield for tall guys

Any other tall guys on here that found a windshield that works well for them. I'm 6'8" and would something that gets my face out of the wind blast
with the least weird buffeting effect. Sorry if I posted in the wrong place this is the first forum I ever joined.

Brian,

OK, I'm about a foot shorter but the previous owner of my '92 FJ is 6'4" and had installed a Laminar Lip on the stock windscreen. He said it made a big difference for him as it raises and smooths out the air flow. Often times taller windscreens or ones with a "flip" at the top can tend to cause more buffeting.

Here's a picture of my fairing with the Laminar Lip installed.

For more info go to: www.laminarlip.com

Hopefully some of the taller riders in the group can give you their first-hand experience.

Good luck!

Well, I got one am very interested in hearing any feedback you hanger I'm how the laminar lip performs.

You may want to explain the meaning of "you hanger I'm how the laminar lip performs". I'm guessing you either typed your message on a phone with auto-complete or your spell check is possessed.

Correct on both counts actually. The damn thing has a mind of it's own. It should have read. "Well, I for one am very interested in hearing any feedback on how the laminar lip performs."

But seriously. I have been spoiled by the rifle faring on my Magna and if this is a way to improve the air pocket that surrounds the ride I would be greatly interested...

I'm 6'2 and use a eagle screens touring screen. The screen gives good protection and weather too. But the turbulence around the helmet creates a lot of noise. I use a HJC flip. My old screen had a touring lip which did the same. Also take in to account that a tall screen on the 3cv fairing  will put undue pressure on the attachment points. The touring screen I have is showing this.

This the best pix I have online right now. bit hard to see I know.

I have looked other screens with a lip as the above shows so will be interested in this thread to.

Cheers.
this will show the height a bit better.

Guys my mates 6'5 and runs the standard
screen on his 95 but he has the laminar lip on his
FJR and he reckons its the best thing since sliced bread!

I also bought an Eagle Touring screen (not cheap, about $240 delivered) for my '93 to replace the "finned" standard one and only did a couple laps of the block before removing it again.  It wasn't as noisy as the standard one but I copped a lot more wind in my face, I'm 5'10".  So, with original screen refitted I sort of solved the problem with earplugs. However, I would like to find a solution to the the buffeting also.  When I duck down a few inches it's great, when I stand on the pegs in clean air it's great.  I like the theory of the Laminar Lip. I believe the solution lies in not so much deflecting ALL the air but equalising the pressure behind the screen which the lip does by sitting off the screen allowing air to pass under it.  I have a #2 bike with an old screen I'm experimenting with. This includes lips of all shapes and sizes and a hole near the base of the screen.  If anything good turns up I'll report my findings.

+1. Just received a GIVI screen (They don`t make them anymore) and plan to put an adjustable lip on it. I too found earplugs the best solution to date - but doesn`t fix communications over 90klm/hr. (Also experimenting with quieter helmets) On the FJ the problem is exacerbated by the distance between helmet & screen. Interestingly Brett (FJ mate of Baldyy`s) told me on the weekend that yamaha went to a lot of trouble to design the tourer finned FJ screen due to instability at really high speeds. (Hadn`t heard of that before but it does make some sense) At 6ft 8 the only thing that will keep ya face outa the wind is a cab. - helmet design will be critical I think. (You`d have ta wear one inside tha house at my place  :sarcastic: )

I'm only 6'1", but have a pretty good solution to the wind and buffeting on my bike.
Using the standard finned OEM screen I've added an extension that retains a "slot" between the fins and the extension.  This give an inner flow of air that helps deflect the airflow up and over.
I frequently wear an open face helmet and its fine.  MY HJC flip is a bit noisier, but not bad.
The extension sits 7" higher than the stock screen.  This can be adjusted for various heights by varying your mount points through the fins.
Numbers in the pic are in mm.

Brian, welcome to the forum.  I put a Zero Gravity sprot touring screen on my 89.  It's about 2-3" taller than OEM and moved the wind blast from just under my chin bar to the top of my helmet  - no objectionable buffeting.  However, I'm 5'9".  I looked on the web and found you can still buy the ZG screen new for about $100.  Perhaps coupling this screen with a laminar lip would be the cat's ass.  Good luck in your search.

Remember reading a lot about replacement windshields on this forum previously.

Having been looking for a taller windshield for my '85 myself, here are some of the threads that I've saved for future reference:

Seems like some people have experienced less wind buffeting by using a windscreen shorter than stock.
You could try removing your existing screen to see if this hold true for your specific height.
