Is there any reason this would not fit the older model FJ's ?  And, if is it just the bracket that holds the muffler or is there some more overt that I am missing?

From your pic it looks like you have a '89 it will fit that year and older.  Just a bracket adjustment is needed

That is what I was thinking.  D&D is a great pipe, or so I have been heard.  It is a little pricey, but it depends on the system you pick.  They don't come up all the time, but every now and again you see a great selection on e-bay.

Has anyone tried D&D exhaust systems?

The only thing i've ever really heard about D&D was that they're horrifically loud.  Generally not bade badly I understand.

Loud as in "so loud that your friends will no longer ride with you" type.  Not cool loud.

My friend has one on his Suzuki RF900, with the carbon fiber can.   They're no louder than my Vance and Hines 4-into-1 setup on my FJ.  And they have an awesome low frequency burble that sounds like a combo of the Remus exhausts you can get on VWs and BMWs and a Monza exhaust I had on an Alfa Romeo GTV-6 a long time ago.  Translation?  It sounds intense, and not really that loud at all.   My V&H is in good shape, but if I keep this FJ I'll either put on a D & D or an all stainless Remus exhaust.  I typically ride with earplugs, but I've ridden his without, and while I'd no sooner ride his than mine for a long time without ear protection (the exhaust note isn't the problem-it's all the wind noise on the highway that I find tiresome) when I've ridden his I think to myself "damn I really would love my bike to sound like this!".   But of course, this is just my 2 Krugerrand, mind you.

                                                                      Cheers,

D&D; A Good system, be sure you get the street packing on the canaster.

I don't understand eBay prices, are they not supposed to be special?

I think some of the sellers think they have something hard to find.  The Barnett Clutch parts on ebay are no deal at all, I can do better just going to my local motorcycle dealer.  It really depends on the seller, some sellers really want to move there products while others stick to one price.

You are correct, it is always a good idea to google a product.

Definitely be sure to get the quiet can.  The standard can is just way too loud.  I wore mine out, then replaced it with a quiet one and it is much, much nicer.
