Guy's,  that seriously needs to picked up by someone from this forum - looks almost museum quality.

It can't be allowed to go to someone who won't truly appreciate it and keep us appraised of its future adventures. !!!

Dean, as someone who regularly (under normal circumstances) spends months each year in the US, why don't you buy it, for that sort of money it wouldn't matter if it was in the shed most of the year.

I’d thought about that Noel, but as “tourists” they made it almost impossible for us to get a bank account in the US, let alone buy and register a bike. Post 9/11 and post money laundering regs, if you don’t have a residence or resident status as a private individual, getting and keeping “assets” can be a nightmare.

I’d even thought about getting my brother-in-law to buy it and I’d pay him, but he reckons his wife would divorce him if he ever brought a bike anywhere near the house - you have to meet her to get the scale of her paranoia !!!

Alright.  I can't afford to buy it. Still throwing money into my  house.  But I'm going to drive down and  check it out. After my12hr shift. A little over an hour from here. I could hold it in heated/airconditioned shop. For someone along with my 10 bikes. They  have to arrange for  payment.
If you want to  buy it. And store it at my house... and use it. I could buy you out later. After I  recover financially from building my house.

If you're out of country. You can come and stay as long as you want. I have a spare bedroom. And an acre. Of land to camp on. Have security cameras too. But live in a  small  2018 people town. Extremely low crime.

I had talked to the  owner. Todd.  Yesterday.  He said it has the high idle hang. He said he  ordered the orings for the manifolds.  And the tires have tread. But maybe  original.  Don't look  bad  but are old. If someone here wants to buy it i can store it here. And can mount new tires for you and  replace the orings before you come and  ride it home. Or you can stay here. And use my stuff to replace it yourself.

We actually have a family house that's empty in Connecticut that we use when we're there - like you it's in a very low crime area and a very nice part of CT, but at the moment we have no idea when we're going to be able to travel to the US again - because I'm "old" and the US is on our "Red List" for Covid, we can't get travel/health insurance Andy the Govt won't help us if we have issues when there. Liz's mum has been a couple of weeks to live max, so at the moment she's pretty depressed about everything, knowing she won't see her again and not being able to do anything to help.

Once things are back on an even keel, we might make some plans to head across - we're actually thinking of bringing our youngest to Houston to see a specialist to help sort out his spinal issues - but as he's listed as vulnerable by the NHS he can't travel anyway.

Bloody COVID !!!

Hey Chris, it will be awhile until I get out to Dan’s house, probably around May ish....
My initial thoughts on the bike is to keep it stock ish.
FZR 3.5” front rim, RPM front suspension, Fork brace, blue spots w/FZ1 m/c, Galfer lines. Penske shock. RPM spin on filter, UniPods, I like that Avon radial 3D Storm 150/80-16 back tire, so I think I’ll keep the 16” back rim (for now)
I might need to do some remedial electrolysis treatment and sealant on the tank....I’ll know more when I get my camera in there.
For a start price of $2k, I can afford ~$1k in mods, I’ll have a well sorted, like new 7500 mile FJ....in theft resistant white.

If or when our convict friends or perhaps Alf, come over to visit, I’ll have a spare FJ available for their use.

....Penske shock...

Hold up Patrick, maybe you should wait until the new year. The prototype 89-90 RPM shock is in the testing phase.

There's something new with with this RPM shock.

Randy - RPM

You know i think I have a brand spanking new never out of the box 93 yzf750r front rim. From when my  93 yzf got knocked off the  kickstand at work. His insurance paid to get all the parts imported. The rim just got a little scratch on it  so I never  replaced it. It's  probably still at my friends house. I still haven't gotten all my stuff back. Hopefully its still there. I think they work on the fj front end?

That's brilliant news Pat, and it couldn't have gone to a better owner. You now have one of each of the 2 best FJ paint schemes.

I'm just sad that you've excluded me from borrowing it when we visit California, as I'm neither a convict, nor called Alf.

That's a very generous offer Dan. Although no longer needed, it was none the less made and is yet another shining example of the camaraderie the FJ fraternity is known for.

There have been many examples of this over the years and I know Doug, (The General) was blown away by the hospitality of the FJ family on his trip through the US and Canada a year or so back.

I’m glad you got that bike, Pat. I thought about it, but, I really am a “one is enough” motorcycle kind of guy. I love the paint scheme. Perhaps we could make your arrival to get the bike a mini forum event, brats on a grille, and an hour or two of locals in the area wishing safe travels home?

I’m also happy to hear there is a new shock for bikes of that vintage in the works. I’ll need one too, Randy.

Best wishes for a safe holiday for all, and great new bike karma for Pat! I am envious of that machine.

Ted

Sounds great Randy!  These mods won’t happen until next summer.
Although....I will have Dan pull the carbs and send them to Robert for him to work is magic on them.
The bike was in storage for 30+ years so a good bubble bath would be in order.

Dunno Dan, we would need to take some hub measurements to make sure the rotors line up and we can use the FJ axle spacer and speedo drive. A quick check shows a 20mm dia. axle for the YZF750r so I would need to take a bearing out and check the OD and width, then see if I can find a comparable OD bearing with a 15mm ID to fit the FJ’s axle..... or 17mm ID if I drill out the fork legs to run a FZR axle.

I look forward to coming out to your new house.  It will be a fun adventure.

The term “convicts” was introduced to this forum by Klavdy as a identifier for Australians, just as Seppos is a term used to describe Americans......and then there’re bog trotters, frogs, etc, etc....

Pat - a HUGE caution - Yamaha parts fiches have the wrong bearing numbers imbedded in their part numbers.  Pretty sure the yzf’s (1000’s and 750’s) are some of them - and it leads you to an incorrect axle size - and misleads you to an “easy” bearing swap that doesn’t work.  BUT, if it is the same as the EXUP FZR1000s - we know the hybrid bearing for that one.

I’m looking back through some of my old info trying to get the definite dimensions

Thanks Chris, I just did a quick check here to verify the axle size:
http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15169.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15169.0)

I currently have a YZF750 USD front end on my ‘84 so *IIRC* the YZF USD fork spacing to be different, which means that the brake caliper mounts are different, which means the wheel has different spacing on the rotor mounts (or the rotor offset is different)

No biggie, my buddy Paul has an extra FZR rim I’ll finagle out of him...if not...

The ‘87/88 FZR1000/750 front rims are almost extinct. The ‘89+ FZR rims are more common and I like the idea of a beefier 17mm front axle on our heavy bikes. The FJ’s fork legs have plenty of material to allow a bore to 17mm dia. axle.

That offer still stands. For anyone in the Fj community.  If you're in the area. (Or want to go a little out of your way and stop by) And  need a place to stay. Or work on your bike. My  door and shop will be open to you. I haven't met anyone at any of the rallies that I didn't like. Or didn't offer up friendship.

I apologize for putting you on the spot. That was not my intention. But, it does seem like it might be one of those moments in time where a group of people can make a good time out of one of life’s little events.
If we can stay up on the logistics, and catch some decent weather, it could be a real nice time.

Absolutely! I would be more than happy to go on a cruise with some fellow FJ riders. Interestingly, that bike seems to be a close twin to mine. My '89 also sat in the PO's garage, well cared for over a number of years. We've since become friends and ride together regularly. I can't imagine why Wisconsin tends to be a place to find old, well cared for machines that live mostly in garages! (spoiler, it's because winter is 6 months)
7500 miles has mine beat handedly, though. Mine has 1k miles for every year it's got under it's belt.

15 years ago I found a mint 1992 FJ in Lafayette Indiana with only 4,500 miles on it....bought it.

I think you are correct, regions with short riding seasons means low miles (if stored correctly)

Todd delivered the bike to my house last night.

Thank you Dan for doing this for me....
Your welcome Pat. No problem. As soon as I  can I'll pull the carbs.

Fred most of my bikes are still at friends houses.

....Penske shock...

Hold up Patrick, maybe you should wait until the new year. The prototype 89-90 RPM shock is in the testing phase.

There's something new with with this RPM shock.

Randy - RPM

Is everyone just ignoring what this "something new" is? Maybe I'm too curious/impatient for my own good

Congrats on the great buy, Pat!

So Pat's 89 has the infamous melted red plug. I've never had one. What do you replace it with? And what else can go along with that being melted.? Or is it just a matter of replacing it?
It  looked good from the  outside but is melted together good.

Dan, use insulated spade (slip fit) connectors. Oppose the genders so you don't cross connect the + and -.

Pat's coming 16th. I couldn't get vacation. Too many off already. I got trade day's from workers from the otherside of the week. So I only have 16th thru the 19th. Wed - Friday. I have to work 20th- 27th.  :dash2:

You are welcome to come. Hang out with Pat at my place.

Got the  carbs back from RPM. Replacing the manifold orings. Got rid of the hanging idle. And the rebuilt carbs. Runs smooth as butter. The rebuilt clutch slave is still leaking, slightly. I will always buy new from RPM. Until they aren't available.

Hey Dan, I got your PM and yes...my order is already in with RPM...I’m getting sent to you a new clutch slave, a rebuild kit for the front brake m/c, some extended reach snap ring pliers (just in case you don’t have them) and some crush washers...
They will be shipped on Monday...should get there by the time I arrive on the 16th.

Very common to have rebuilt clutch slave leaks....the aluminum bore gets pitted...new seals don’t work.

Thank God for Robert @ RPM and his excellent carb service....that ultrasound cleaning is the way to go...

Cheers

How many are coming to wish Pat safe travels back to Arizona? Looks to be a 5 hour commute for me here in the cities, and I’m going to leave after work on Thursday, and hopefully show before sunset.
I’ll hang around until Dan throws me off the place, either Friday or Saturday.
Doing a chain service and an oil change, maybe a wash and wax. Looking forward to the ride and meeting a few of the gents.

Ted

Dan,
It’s almost all good.

What wasn’t good was I was changing the oil and servicing the chain in the 89 FJ, and the wind today took the filter housing off the bench, and broke the outside flange of the oil filter housing. Ouch. I installed a new O ring, but, sure as hell, there are a couple of drops on the floor under the bike. This one hasn’t leaked a drop since I bought it. I already ordered the spin on kit from RPM and a half dozen small filters, but, if they don’t arrive in time, I’ll have a bike that drips a bit under me.

Hey, what are friends for?

Ted

I'm sure I have a couple of stock housings around here . But I  don't know where anything is.

This became a disaster.

Looked on the bike this morning, and there are perhaps two teaspoons of new Castrol air cooled motorcycle synthetic 10W40 on the floor. The O ring is bulging out of the broken edge of the casting. I have no confidence at all of running the bike 5 hours anywhere, no spare oil housing, do have the spin on conversion and some filters ordered from RPM, but, suspect there isn’t a snowballs chance in hell they will be here by Thursday.

If you are a central MN FJer, with an extra oil filter housing (stock) on hand, and are reading this REACH OUT, please. I really want to go.

Got home around 0200 from the races down in Fontana this weekend. Got Teds adapter shipped around 0900, it should be there in time. USPS is pretty good getting stuff there in 2-3 days with regular priority mail. I checked UPS overnight it was $107 and 2nd day air was $76.

Robert,
The last time I ordered from you, it was indeed, two days. Trust me, the problem, if there is one, is never you. It is the guys you give it to.

Quick question-how much oil will I lose if I just unbolt the filter housing and swap in the spin on adapter? Is it possible to do this without draining the oil, which, the V&H pipe makes difficult.

Thanks in advance,
Ted

Less than half a quart I would think.

Yes, it is as simple as unbolting your old oil filter housing, following the directions for the adapter I sent and spinning on one of the new filters.

Who-hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Box showed up TODAY, one day early, EXCELLENT work, Randy. I should have it installed and on the road tonight, a day early. The postman should get a plug as well, I suppose, but, our relationship has had its ups and downs, mostly downs, but, I digress.

Report, later.

My tailpipe bracket broke. No big deal, let’s fabricate a new one.

Greetings from Colorado, north of Denver, all is well… sorry for the late check in, no WiFi last night at the hotel. Crossing Iowa and Nebraska on that I-80 is a trip. Traffic absolutely hauls ass, trucks doing 80-85 and cars doing 90+…... all day long, hour after hour. Pushing a headwind the bike is getting ~38mpg while cruising at 5500rpm….love the FJ roll on to 110.
That FJ is running flawless. Thank you Dan for your excellent prep work, I very much appreciate it along with your hospitality. Ted and I had a great time. Your neck of Wisconsin is beautiful. I’m going to follow your recommendation and ride the Rockies. The weather looks clear, temp in the mid 70’s.
I’ll check back in when I get to Utah.
Thanks again Dan.

Keep an eye on the oil Pat. After running home at 80-85 in temps in the 90s further west, I was down some.

Have a safe trip. It was a pleasure meeting you and Dan.

Looks like andyoutandabout is going to stop by in July.

Like I've said before. Anyone of the fjowners. Is welcome to stop by. Whether they need to work on their bike or just a place to spend the night or a week.
That includes those from out of country.

Pat have a safe ride. And have fun.

Thanks again Dan, and Ted, sure enough, the oil level light was winking at me....needed 1/2 quart.
