Title: 2021 WCR, Cove Palisades State Park, June 4-6, 2021
Post by: racerrad8 on January 15, 2021, 10:51:16 AM
Calling all FJer's

The 2021 WCR is being hosted at Cove Palisades State Park, Oregon.

Dates:
June 4th - 6th
Many arrive on Thursday (June 4th) and depart Sunday Morning (June 6th). The rides this year are being coordinated for all three days for those who can stay and ride Sunday. Campfire sessions are held Thur-Sat night to talk everything FJ and so much more.

Location:
The Cove Palisades State Park
Culver, OR 97734
Phone: 800-452-5687 or 541-546-3412
Website: https://stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=24 (https://stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=24)

This years host, Frank (Flynt) has posted several accommodations below and in this prior topic: 2021 Rally (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=19710.msg201281#msg201281)

Accommodation options I know of are:

1.  Cove Palisades State Park...  they have a few cabins, but I suspect they are booked already.  They also have lots of camping and RV camping spots and we're pretty much surrounded by Federal land where camping is OK and free.  If camping or RV is your plan, take a look and see if you can lock something down.

2.  Hotel/Motel in Redmond or Madras, 20-30 miles from Cove Palisades...  Even Bend could be an option, but that's 45 minutes from the Park.  We can arrange morning meet ups and group lunches during the rides, then maybe have a group dinner/get together.  Not ideal, but no hotels out this way.

3.  Air BnB...  we live on what's called the Grandview Peninsula and I know there are some private home rentals in areas called 3 Rivers, Airport Park, Forrest Park, and Rim Park (where we live).  Something out here would be ok, but services out this way are very limited...  plan to go to the Cove Palisades Marina or there are a few places in Culver to get any prepared food.  Culver has a Dollar General, but real groceries require a trip to Madras or Terrebonne.

So my suggestion is somebody (Travis?) take the plunge, set the date, and make some reservations...  then start an attendee list with name and your plans so others can make their plans.  I'd encourage people to stay in the area longer if you can...  Crater Lake, Newberry Caldera, Sisters/Camp Sherman, Mt Hood/Hood River, etc...  lots of things around us that could make a very nice trip...  (Maybe Derek and Donna can weigh in, they are familiar with the area).

Once we have a list of folks that will make the trek up here, I'll take up the task of planning rides, lunch stops, and a group dinner location.  Please feel free to ask questions as you're working through your plans, but I'm not going to do any planning around the lodging...  that'll be on you.

Frank

PS - Palisades has several camping options...  you'll want Crooked River for the best location, other than the cabins which are right at the Marina.  Avoid Perry South and Monte...  they're another 20minutes past our place and, although very nice, are really off the beaten path and require extended travel on gravel roads to get to.

With this announcement, we already have FJer's ready to get 2021 rolling. If you are attending or are a possible attendee, please add your name to the list so the planning may commence for this annual pilgrimage for all the FJ has to offer.
If you are open to sharing an accommodation, put that next to your name.

Attending:

Frank (Flynt) and Diane
Travis (T Legg)
Ian (I Legg)
Kurt (yamaha fj rider)

Thank you Randy...

To be clear the Rally will of course be dependent on the situation with the Pandemic...  For now we could have the Rally and be compliant with the restrictions here...  I'm hopeful it will only get better.  I tend to be very optimistic and hope to see you guys (even Rick) this year.

I would certainly like to make this Oregon trip.

Hope to see you Craig!  You should book an RV site near Travis and tow up, maybe even stay for a bit longer to check out the area...  You guys will be across the road from the lake, about 3 miles from the marina cafe and the cabins, and a couple miles from my house.

All - I'm happy to see some interest and I'll invest some time to make sure the rides are worthwhile.  Hopefully most of the accommodation requirements can be met.  Camp and RV sites are filling quickly and I'm getting nowhere trying to reserve the local cabins, so might be time to pursue other options for those that aren't campers (and campers should get something reserved!).  So far only two I know of would need a cabin...  let's add lodging status to the list so I can help folks find a place to lay down.

I got my first jab last week...  and the way the shots are going it's looking like we can pull this off safely.

I know Travis has a camping spot and Ramos a cabin, but not sure if any others have reserved space already?  If not, you should jump on it...  might already be late.  Cabins were and are full, we got lucky during a glitch in reservations and got one...  but that's it.

Going out for a scouting ride tomorrow...  and to try a lunch stop I've had my eye on.  75 and sunny all day so Spring is definitely here.

A couple of weeks ago while on a stop during a ride up Geiger grade I made a stupid mistake. I forgot to put my side stand up and apparently the safety switch wasn't working so off I went. I was doing fifty to sixty mph when I leaned into my first left hand corner. The kickstand dug in to the pavement I realized what was happening and tried to straighten up but had to  make the tight corner. The bike hooked left and high sided tossing me onto my shoulder and chest. The bike flipped over me and landed seatside down next to me. Surprisingly it only received moderate damage. It broke the rear grab rail, smashed the windscreen and mirrors, bent the brake handle and left foot peg tore off the ignition side cover and put a dent in the tank and a few small cracks in the fairing. All of that of that is repairable in fact my son rode the bike back down to the house. I received four broken ribs and a grade three clavicle seperation. I was hoping I would heal up in time for the rally and I think I will be riding again by then but just before I took the ride I finished taking my black fj engine out to reverse the first gear I had installed backwards when I put an undercut gear set in last October. I have been able to go back to limited work after the first week but I don't think I'll be healed up enough in time to finish the repair and reinstall the motor. I have a campsite reserved that can be used by anybody who wants to attend the rally. If anyone is interested just let me know. I was really looking forward to going I think it going to be a great time for those who make it. If somehow I do get the bike back together in time we could share the campsite ( I have been vaccinated) they allow up to six per campsite.

Travis,
commiserations on the recent off. Sorry to trot out the familiar cliche, but a high-side like that could have been so much worse for both rider and bike. At least if you were riding with Ian, he could carry you home on one shoulder and the bike on the other. Get well soon. Sounds like this minor set back hasn't put you off riding.

You are absolutely right Andy. God was very forgiving of my mistake to both me and my bike. Ian was right behind me. He told me he stopped and turned to make sure the cars behind us stopped and by the time he turned around I had my helmet off and was climbing over the gaurdrail to get out of the road. I remember him being beside me as I sat back down in the dirt. My vision washed out for about ten minutes or so and then the highway patrol arrived. After a short discussion with them and being checked out by an ambulance crew who suggested I go to the hospital my daughter who Ian had called arrived at the point I had departed from. I walked about five hundred feet back took a look at my bike that Ian had coasted down then got into my daughter's truck and she drove me down. On the way down she convinced me to go to the hospital instead of home,a wise though expensive choice. There was no need for Ian to carry my bike on his shoulder although I'm sure he could have. I am blessed to have great kids. I think my helmet and leather jacket served me well but will have to be replaced. I was thankful I wasn't wearing my new ignitor pro gloves as my hands took a little gouging but will heal ,the gloves would not. Ian has suggested I leave the dent in my tank as a reminder to put my kickstand up.

Good to hear that you was relatively lucky in that bad luck situation. That sidestand switch cant be trusted i discovered that yesterday when the engine did not cut off when
putting the sidestand down. I replaced my switch last winter because i had one that was bad.Now i always take a look down before takeoff.

Glad you’re ok Travis. Heal up. I know all about those broken ribs. I also broke 4 on my low side. Ouch.
Take your pain meds. Do your breathing exercises. I’m very leery of OxyContin but my Doc said I needed them to dull the pain so I could take regular breaths. He wanted to keep my lungs clear. The pain of the broken ribs caused me to take very shallow breaths, my pO2 was ~87% with my shallow breathing.
The doc said, if I developed pneumonia in that lung I was in serious trouble.

Funny thing about FJ sidestand switch’s....the Aussie folks say that their FJ’s never had them.

Take care Trav...

On a side(stand) note.. when doing the BMF (British Motorcycle Federation) training course, back in the 80s, they really drummed home the side stand double check (you'll see me physically touch it with my left boot), look over shoulder, then away drill. Now, not wishing to jinx others or myself, or lecture on and on, but its a good drill and I think I have only felt the side stand bite once, having forgot once in 35 odd years of riding. (luckily it kicked back up that time).
Anyway, my larger point is renewed/refreshed practice. I've been watching a web 'influencer' known as 'Motojitsu' and he's all about practice of good habits and skill sharpening in a car lot. Although there's a bunch of super technical stuff, he talks a lot of sense about essential skills like emergency swerving and braking. In fact I've been inspired enough to buy a couple of bucks worth of cones with the idea of finding a local car lot and seeing if I would pass his class.
Which ultimately all got me thinking that getting a bunch of Fjers on a track day would really be fun.

Hello Travis

I am sorry to hear about unscheduled departure but, glad to know you will be ok. Motorcycles can be repaired and there will be more rallies. You and Ian will be missed. Taking the time to heal properly is always the best decision.

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Kurt I've seen you as a confirmed attendee for the 2020 wcr I was hoping to meet you therr before it was cancelled. I banged out my footpeg and repositioned my right trigger coil and straightened my left footpeg then took a ride up Geiger today.it is three weeks to the day since I crashed it. It felt great to be back on the bike. I've begun my new practice of not starting the bike untill the kickstand is up. I still need to get a new footpeg I want to find where to get the lowered pegs as long as I'm replacing them. I still need a windsheild and grab bar but the left side cover has been located and Pat is sending me a trigger coil set that doesn't have a groove cut in to it for free. That's very nice of him. I'm still not in good enough shape to reinstall the motor of my black bike that I take to rallys or even carry the motor to the bench so I can split the cases to put first gear back in the right direction. I hope I see you at the next RPM rally.

Travis, you can always trailer the yellow bike up and ride for a couple of days, this might be easier on you. I also prefer to ride to the rallies but, going to a rally is better than not going. No pressure do what is best for you. I was just thinking of another option for you.

I seems to be about 50/50 on ridding verses trailering for me, if Kiki is coming, my bike will be on a trailer. She doesn't like ridding over 300 miles per day. Fred and I seem to trailer when we go to WCR. I am hoping to ride and take the scenic route this years rally.

Best wishes.

Kurt

Travis,

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes with the sidestand. Hoping that you mend in time for the Rally. As Kurt mentioned, you and Ian could trailer to the Rally.

You mentioned lower pegs. Here is the link. The first 2 are what you want.

Sorry to hear about your off Travis, a high side at our age and at that speed, man, that's a recipe for some serious damage.
I occasionally forget the stand, always as a result of a distraction that interrupts the sequence, thank goodness for the safety switch, it's never lost on me that each time I do that is a potential road strike at speed and the certainty of a nasty outcome. There is a very good reason pilots are taught to start over on pre flight inspections if they are distracted or interrupted.

Here, we ride on the LHS of the road so an extended stand is higher off the ground because of the camber, which is almost worse because it lets you ride further and faster, but when it does hit, say on a bump or a LH corner it sends you spearing off into oncoming traffic.

I worked for Honda in the 80's and manufacturers were at the time making an effort to address this problem, albeit a seriously misguided one. Some had rubber tips that looked like pencil erasers that would deflect when the weight of the bike was placed on the stand but if it clipped the road while in motion, it would flick the stand up (sort of worked, sometimes) Another (terrible) idea that made it into production was a side stand that would only stay down while weighted, what a disaster, if you stood the bike upright or even leaned up against it, the stand would flick up. We are talking the 80's here, what was so hard about coming up with the safety switch/engine cut-out idea, the mechanical action of the side stand retracting would have made this easy, the stand itself being an actuator like it is now.

Nothing leads to a rider forgetting to retract the side stand more than being on an unfamiliar bike. The first turn from our shop was a sweeping left hander a few hundred metres away. We had so many incidents on test rides that it became a habit borne of necessity to stand there and oversee their departure, it was fortunate that corner was a divided road with a heavily planted out and wide median strip, it saw quite a bit of action.

Travis, I guess you don't need reminding that you got unlucky and lucky, that could have been so much worse.

19 mths ago I had a off that resulted in a neck injury and spent months shuffling between bed and couch on a walking frame, sleeping upright and relentless 24/7 severe pain. My ability to work remains limited to this day and I still can't ride the FJ too far, fortunately the more upright and better sprung RT can be.

The point of relaying this story is, I was going probably 15-20kph!, a fast running speed, just enough momentum to throw me forward and land on my head, had I landed on my feet at that speed I probably wouldn't have even fallen over. Haha, maybe God has favourites.

As they say, you ain’t rode ‘til you been throwed. I guess we have both now earned our stripes as bona fide riders.

Glad to see it hasn't dampened you enthusiasm for riding, get well, and get back on it.

I think a trailer might be a good idea guys. I'll start looking for one now.Hopefully the Australians don't give me too hard of a time.

Haha, I don’t think anyone would begrudge you driving to the rally under the circumstances, just don’t get used to it or even think about pulling the same stunt next year

Nothing makes you feel more like an old man than a good thump on the ground. The first week my great achievment was getting out of the chair. I look forward to sleeping in a bed again someday. Despite the intense pain in the beginning my fear of opioid induced constipation with four broken ribs kept me from taking them after the first two days. The pain is very manageable now baring an unplanned sneeze. I took my first ride yesterday and it was very comfortable . I went back to work the next week because I am a self employed refrigeration contractor but thank God my son works with me because I'm pretty useless with anything that requires much strength or sitting on the ground hunched over to work on equipment under the refrigerated cabinets. I see a light at the end of the tunnel though. I hope you continue on to a full recovery. I think neck injury's are probably one of the most debilitating.

I would certainly like to make this Oregon trip.

Frank (Flynt) and Diane
Travis (T Legg)
Ian (I Legg)
Kurt (yamaha fj rider)

Possible:
Andyoutandabout
FJmonkey
ZOANOM
Midget Mike
Mark Olsen
Zari

Took the liberty of adding Mark O and Ramos to the possibles...

For the benefit of all, I thought I should say we're not cancelling out based on Travis' off...  Hopefully he can still make it, but the rally will go on.

Kurt has confirmed his plans to ride up from LA area along the coast, so maybe Monkey can enlist some SoCal escorts and make a trip out of it?  I haven't heard much from others, but believe Andy is finalizing his plans to come up as well...  I would like to have more solid commits in the next couple of weeks so I can line up lunch stops and dinner plans for the group.  If you're leaning one way or the other, please either update this list or send me a PM.

Teaser shot from cafe at the Marina...  likely spot for breakfast and gathering to depart.  Lucky bums in the cabin can walk over for beers, etc...

Hope to see several of you in Central Oregon soon.

If I can get the ingredients, maybe I could send up a fire starter kit with a SoCal attendee driving/riding up.

Unfortunately things have changed and I won't be making it this year.

Best wishes

It's looking like mid-70's and sunny for Friday and Saturday rides, but I'd bring a cool vest if you've got one as it might be hotter than forecast.  I have a couple routes planned, out towards John Day Fossil Beds via Antelope, Shaniko, and Fossil...  this is pretty much the ride we did with Ramos along when Andy broke down in Oregon a couple years back.  The other will be up to the Columbia River Gorge via Maupin and then back to the Palisades via Hood River and Mt Hood...  spectacular roads and views on both routes.  If the Mt Hood weather doesn't cooperate I have a backup ride of Cascade Lakes loop extended out to Newberry Caldera and Lake Paulina...  In any case, we're going to have some spectacular PNW riding together boys...

I'll start a PM thread for those attending to get into more details, but general plan is to meet up 0900 Friday morning at the Cove Marina cafe for breakfast and then depart by 1000 or so.  Thursday afternoon/evening we'll setup a "welcome to Oregon" gathering for those that can make it, probably at my house which is essentially at the Palisades.

More to follow on PM...

Frank

Quick report out on 2021 WCR...

Attendees:

Frank (Flynt) and Diane
Rick (ZOANOM)
Midget Mike
Ron Oort
Travis (T Legg)
Ian (I Legg, aka "The Bone")
Andyoutandabout
Craig Zari

We had a few mechanicals starting with Wizard's rear shock blowing the seal the week before...  I rode '84 FJ solo and the '16 BMW GS with Diane onboard.  Andy's exhaust collector broke, but he was able to stabilize with Al flashing and a couple big hose clamps.  Travis broke his chain and frag'd the side of his engine, but he was able to coast into our first rest stop where we had lunch and waited for Ian to return with their truck/trailer...  the Travis rode Ian's Kawasaki for the second day.  Craig got a flat tire the second day near the end of the ride, but Ron had the fix on hand...  Then Ron killed his battery Saturday night and initiated a spontaneous day of relaxation on Sunday.  By Tuesday everyone had returned home safely, so all's well that ends well...

Riding was good to great, but we did suffer from a couple of pretty windy days.  I'll leave further commentary to the other riders, but I had a great time and was delighted to "host" the event. We learned some things this time around look forward to doing it again sometime.  The miles and miles of turns from Shaniko to Fossil will surely bring people back...  and the riding to the West is equally amazing, but not quite open in all cases yet.  Best time for an Oregon Rally is probably Fall...

Thanks to all that made the trek and I hope it was worth the effort...

Frank

Amazing weekend, despite the setbacks... Frank and Diane were first-class hosts, and their home is absolutely spectacular. The roads provided a juicy combination of high-speed sweepers with wide-open views, and twisty, technical downhills that keep you on your toes. I will definitely return for more.

The cabin by the shore of Lake Billy Chinook was perfect, and thanks so much to Diane for the linens and accessories she graciously provided. None of us had thought about pillows or sheets.

I made a command decision over the weekend before the rally, and picked up a more modern bike (for the commute, mainly, but decided to bring it to get some seat time in a more aggressive setting). I'm afraid to say it's a Honda... but holy shit, I'm hooked.

Note: The MoTow was flawless. Ask Craig - I was loaded up and ready to roll in 10 minutes.

Astute observers will notice the absence of a clutch lever and shifter. This is a 2010 VFR1200 DCT - "Dual Clutch Transmission"  Fully automatic. It's like riding a 170HP Moped. It took some adjustment, but it is amazing.

All in all, the rally was another great weekend of riding and "guy time". Can't wait for the next one.
