I am going to order a windscreen from Eagle and am abit confused about the fastners.  I have an 86 and it has some rubber plugs that hold the windshield in place.  What I dont understand is the threads and the little stud that screws up from the bottom.   Does that keep the fastner from going down to far,  or what is the purpose of the little  studs?         Does anyone know where you can get a windscreen with the lip at the top any closer than the downunder country?              Thanks DCW

Before you order a screen I have a Touring Screen from Gustaffsson in Florida that I ordered last month for my '84.  Had it on for an afternoon, but the height didn't work for me, as it placed the wind smack in the middle of my forehead, producing an unearthly howl at speed (I'm 5'11"-were I perhaps an inch shorter it would be quiet I think).  I'm not certain where you are, but if you're interested let me know;  It's already been drilled.  Its a medium charcoal gray.

By studs do you mean the rubber grommets that fit into the mounting holes behind the screen?  I'm almost positive that your '86 has the same fairing setup as the '84 and '85.  The rubber grommets work like the plastic drywall mounts when you can't access a wooden stud;  When you screw the bolt in the rubber the threads (which are at the end of the grommet) pull towards the screw, causing the grommet to mushroom out.  It then holds the bolt secure against the fairing.  They can fall through, as there's nothing behind the opening besides the instrument cluster and open space, so make sure that you tighten them enough that they grab the fairing, but not so much that the bolts deform the screen.

Besides Gustaffsson, who makes a screen with the upturned lip (but not the touring screen, that has no upturned lip) and Eagle, your only other choice would be from the FJ UK club.  Problem with that is before you can buy anything you have to become a member, which is about $25.  Shipping sucks, and Doc (the guy who runs the club store) doesn't offer shipping insurance.  I purchased a Baglux Bag and Tank protector from them and shippping was almost $100.  So really, your two choices are Eagle and Gustaffsson.  Also know that while Eagle's screens come predrilled, Gustaffsson's don't so you'll have to drill the mounting holes.  Unless you buy mine, of course   Hope this helps.

If they are like the ones on an '89, those plugs are called wellnuts, and from the dealer they can be a bit pricey.

In the US, they can be had at ACE, or about any good hardware store a lot cheaper.

E Double     Yes I would be interested in the Gustaffsson windscreen.  I'm 5 10 so it might just work for me.  Does it have the lip or is it just taller than oem.    Let me know what you want for it and I live in Southern Illinois.   After I thought about the gromments awhile,   I bet the one I pulled out was one that the screw had striped off and was still in there.   Mine also had plugs in some holes, like the drywall things that spread out,  and when you pushed them in the gromments they would spread.       This is my first FJ and I really enjoy and appreciate this site                   Thanks DCW   You can email me at cwhistle@gmail.com

It doesn't have a lip, but I would say its at least 4 or 5" taller than stock, with wider sides.  I tried to embed a photo here but it didn't work.  Here's a link to the photo; http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/L92mlSbxwHcEKKb0K7XMNzjBPl47FAyRMmb0Lhew-l0?feat=directlink.  I'll also send a pic plus details to your email.

Hi guys, I'm pretty sure the 84-85 windscreen won't fit on an 86-87. I looked at some pictures to verify it, but the blinkers on the fairing of the later model FJs make it a completely different windscreen. I recently bought a windscreen from Zero Gravity (www.zerogravity-racing.com )for my 85 and I like it ($79). It's a light smoke and comes predrilled. It is a little lower than my stock one but the way it's rounded and the darker color make the bike look faster sitting still. I tried to add pictures but it didn't work out for me, I need some training in that area. You can see the difference in the windscreen shapes by checking out the addresses below below. I'm not familiar with the two other companies mentioned earlier, Eagle and Gustafson, could you post the websites, I've got another FJ that needs a windscreen and I might like something different.     Mike

I've had one on my '91 for around 4 or 5 years now......It survived my highsider so I can vouch for their strength.

Yeah, for some reason I was thinking that the '86 looked like the '84-85 but with larger displacement.  Does anyone have a pic of the '86 to verify?  Cheers

I think the 86 is a bit narrower at the bottom because of the different fairing

Whoa.  The one on the right is an '85?  That mirror setup is mental.  They look like hand puppets!

So now I know.  '86 is definitely not like '84-85.  Cheers for the info.
